Implementing AI in Practice: Many Challenges Remain

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân05/12/2024

NDO - "AI will be even better in the years to come, but at present, AI still has limitations and is far from creating certain intelligence, not reaching the level of intelligence of a cat," Professor Yann Lecun, New York University and Director of Artificial Intelligence Science at Meta, USA, opened the Scientific Discussion "Deploying AI in practice".

On the afternoon of December 4, at the Ahmaz Conference Center Hall, the Scientific Discussion "AI Implementation in Practice" received special attention from many young people. Here, scientists all commented that AI is in the development stage, with a lot of potential but also many challenges for units to deploy AI in practice.

"AI is not omnipotent in all areas"

Professor Yann Lecun, New York University and Director of Artificial Intelligence Science at Meta, USA, said that we currently have countless different opinions about AI, both positive and negative. Some people are worried that AI will replace them, but others see that computer systems with AI are better, completing millions of calculations, better than humans.

He said that in the 60s, people said that in 10 years, AI would replace humans, but until now, AI is still in the development stage. It is still very difficult to have a direction for AI development. "We need to understand that if there is an entity that is smarter than us, it does not mean that it will be smarter than humans in every field. For AI to develop, humans need to teach skills," said Professor Yann Lecun.

Professor Yann Lecun, New York University and Director of Artificial Intelligence Science at Meta, USA, made recommendations to orient AI, in which he said that we should abandon generative, probabilistic or supervised learning AI models and choose another approach to make AI smarter.

Therefore, we should add human knowledge to artificial intelligence so that the AI platform is open; train future AI to be able to speak every language in the world. And therefore, we need an open source for artificial intelligence.

In 2019, when Dr. Bui Hung Hai returned to Vietnam to take on the position of General Director of VinAI, he said that affordability and access to AI are two important things.

Therefore, VinAI's mission is to expand accessibility and affordability to bring AI to everyone. "There needs to be a synchronous method so that AI can understand all the world's languages. In particular, Chat GPT is an open source model with strong capabilities and is popular because it can run on computers and is not too large," Dr. Hai shared.

Potential applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare

Professor Do Ngoc Minh, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC, USA), VinUni University (Vietnam), Member of the VinFuture Prize Preliminary Council, said that the school currently has 50 masters and 50 PhDs, 10 graduate students to do research related to AI applications in health and has had certain results.

He cited that in 2022, VinUniversity (VinUni) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) opened the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC). The project combines two cancer treatment research units to find chemotherapy and surgical treatment regimens... that limit cell removal.

In breast cancer, taking cell samples to check if the cancer cells are cleared will have to be taken many times, making the patient tired and painful. At this time, with the support of AI, it helps to quickly scan thousands of samples and greatly relieves the patient.

Accordingly, he affirmed that many applications are in the research and development stage. There have been many evidences published 10 years ago showing that AI can recognize an object in a short time with absolute accuracy. He said that AI needs to be utilized more effectively, needs to be adjusted in the real world to adapt more realistically to the technology.

In applying AI to the development of the pharmaceutical industry, Professor Do Ngoc Minh also said that Vietnam does not have an advantage because it does not have a large pharmaceutical company and does not have a company with a foundation for drug research and development. Therefore, Vietnam does not meet the important conditions for AI to be able to collect data from the field.

However, Professor Do Ngoc Minh also pointed out the advantage that Vietnam has a large population and diverse medical conditions. If AI is used to collect medical health conditions, it is an area that can be exploited and used.
