10. BMW 330e

The first car on our list is the BMW 330e. The German brand’s compact sedan features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor. The total system output is 288 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.6 seconds. The car comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but xDrive all-wheel drive models are also available.

BMW claims the car can travel up to 22 miles on a single charge, and the 330e retains most of the 3 Series' features that make it such a popular car.

Next on the list is Toyota’s hugely popular RAV4 SUV. The Toyota RAV4 Prime uses a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a pair of powerful electric motors. The total system output is 302 horsepower, which is more than the BMW 330e.

The all-electric range is also quite impressive, with a maximum range of 42 miles on a single charge. The RAV4 Prime has all-wheel drive, but unlike a traditional AWD, the RAV4 doesn’t have a driveshaft. Instead, it uses a rear electric motor to power the rear wheels independently and increase traction.

This is the first Korean compact SUV to make the list. The Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid has an electric range of 34 miles, which is a bit lower than its competitors. However, the Sportage also includes a traditional all-wheel drive system with a total output of 261 horsepower.

In particular, the Sportage has a more premium and sophisticated design with a quiet, smooth and enjoyable driving experience. Most of the materials are of high quality and well arranged.

4. Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid

In a recent comparison test of 11 compact SUVs, the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid came in second overall. This proves that the Hyundai Tucson is not just a plug-in hybrid, but a great small SUV. Like the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has a combined output of 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Power comes from a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor. The Tucson can currently travel 33 miles on a single charge.

3. Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The next vehicle on our list is the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Positioned in the subcompact and compact SUV segment, the Crosstrek uses a 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor for a total output of 148 horsepower. Power is sent to the same symmetrical all-wheel drive system found in other Crosstreks, so this Hybrid retains much of Subaru’s off-road prowess, including X-Mode.

However, the Crosstrek's all-electric range is just 17 miles.

2. Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid

The second-generation Niro has grown in size, with a greater emphasis on rear space. It's also more stylish, with a design similar to the EV6.

Topping the list is the Toyota Prius Prime. Technically, the 2022 Toyota Prius Prime is the only car with a starting price under $30,000. An all-new, more powerful, and more efficient 2023 Toyota Prius Prime is coming soon, but for now, the 2022 is still the cheapest plug-in.

With a low power output of just 121 horsepower, the all-electric range is rated at 25 miles on a single charge.
