This is the first multilateral foreign activity of General Secretary and President To Lam at a global forum of the world's leading importance; marking one year since Vietnam and the United States established a comprehensive strategic partnership and towards the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
The Future Summit and the 79th United Nations General Assembly took place in the context of the world situation continuing to develop complicatedly. Peace and cooperation are the main trends, but strategic competition between major powers is increasingly fierce, having a profound impact on global security, economy and trade, posing great challenges to multilateralism and the United Nations in particular. Hotspots, geopolitical tensions and non-traditional security issues, such as climate change, energy security, food security, epidemics, etc. continue to have negative impacts on global development and the process of countries implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The greater the challenge, the greater the need for enhanced international cooperation.
In that context, the Future Summit organized by the United Nations with the theme “Multilateral solutions for a better future” (from September 22 to 23) and the High-level General Debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly with the theme “Leaving no one behind: Working together to promote peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations” (from September 24 to 28) aimed to unify global solutions to current urgent global challenges and issues.
Since Vietnam joined the United Nations on September 20, 1977, the Vietnam-United Nations relationship has been continuously strengthened and enhanced, increasingly deepened. The United Nations has accompanied Vietnam from the stage of national reconstruction, post-war recovery, to the period of breaking the embargo and international integration. During the recent Covid-19 pandemic response, the United Nations promptly supported Vietnam in terms of policy advice, medical supplies and equipment, and vaccines, contributing to helping Vietnam control the epidemic and recover the economy.
Over the past 50 years, Vietnam has participated more proactively and actively and made substantial and extensive contributions in all areas of the United Nations' core activities in peacekeeping, security and development cooperation. Vietnam has successfully held many important positions at the United Nations, such as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, a member of the Human Rights Council, the International Law Commission, Vice President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, etc. Vietnam has also made many important contributions to the process of regional and global cooperation.
In the nearly 30 years since Vietnam and the United States established diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation has made strong progress. After a year of upgrading relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two sides continue to actively implement the agreement between the two countries' senior leaders and the Joint Statement on Upgrading Vietnam-US Relations (2023). The two sides focus on economics, trade and investment; consider science, technology and innovation as breakthrough areas of cooperation; promote cooperation in climate change response, education and training, with a focus on training high-quality human resources.
On the strong development of Vietnam-United Nations relations, General Secretary and President To Lam led the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to attend the Future Summit, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, continuing to demonstrate Vietnam's active, proactive participation and responsible contribution to the international community; contributing to affirming and enhancing the country's position; conveying the message of strengthening multilateralism, working together to create a peaceful, stable, prosperous and sustainable future for all people around the world; further deepening and effectively deepening the cooperation between Vietnam and the United Nations and international partners and friends.
Continuing to implement the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and towards the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations, the working trip of General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed Vietnam's policy and long-term vision on developing relations with the US. The meetings and contacts of General Secretary and President To Lam in the US contributed to concretizing the commitments between the two countries' senior leaders and promoting bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of economics, trade, investment and science and technology.
Wishing the working trip of General Secretary, President To Lam and his wife along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the Future Summit, the 79th United Nations General Assembly and work in the United States a great success, contributing to further strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and the United Nations, the United States and conveying the message that Vietnam is an active and trustworthy partner, contributing responsibly and effectively to the common work of the international community for a common future of peace, stability, prosperity and sustainability.
