The picture was drawn in chalk, depicting the image of tanks and infantry of our army entering the Independence Palace.
This beautiful and vivid work was drawn by teacher Nguyen Tri Hanh, an art teacher at Hermann Gmeiner Vinh High School (Nghe An province).
With his talented hands, gratitude and passionate heart, Mr. Hanh contributed his efforts, time and passion to join the atmosphere towards the important day of the country. This chalk painting was completed by the teacher from Nghe An after 2 sessions.
The painting depicts the historic moment when a tank crashed through the gate of the Independence Palace on April 30, 1975, drawn by teacher Nguyen Tri Hanh in chalk on the board.
Sharing with VietNamNet , teacher Hanh said that the idea of creating a work to celebrate the 50th anniversary of national reunification had been planned by him for a long time and was completed on April 11.
“In the process from coming up with the idea to starting to draw the work, I researched a lot of documents, books, and even asked History teachers to better understand and build the context and image for the work. I chose chalk to draw because this is an item that teachers like me are attached to every day. After the idea was formed, I started drawing on April 10 and after 2 sessions, I finished it on April 11. In the painting, I also drew the image of a blue dove symbolizing peace after the country's reunification,” said Mr. Hanh.
Mr. Hanh said that the work was drawn on the board with just a normal box of colored chalk. In fact, according to Mr. Hanh, this is just the cheapest type of colored chalk.
Teacher Nguyen Tri Hanh said that in this work, the most difficult part is the tank, because of the many small details.
The work was painted by Mr. Hanh in the school's function room, outside of class hours. "Usually, after each day of teaching, I often give myself a private space to create works," Mr. Hanh shared.
Teacher Hanh said that creating a painting recreating this historical moment was not only to commemorate April 30 but also to educate students about the history, struggles and sacrifices of previous generations to have the country today.
The teacher said that the most difficult part of the painting was the tank, because of the many small details. In addition, the difficulty also came from the chalk material. “This is not an easy material. Because of the limitations of color, it is necessary to mix colors to create vivid colors. Chalk material also cannot spread color like normal painting materials. Therefore, to spread color, it mainly depends on the hand-painting technique,” Mr. Hanh shared.

What makes Mr. Hanh happiest is that the finished painting has received many compliments and excitement from the students. Most of them commented that the work looks like a 3D painting, even like a photo.
“Not only did they look at and take pictures with the artwork, they were also interested in the topic and asked questions about history. Through the photos and research about this event, I also introduced and explained many related details to them,” said Mr. Hanh.
In addition to this painting, teacher Nguyen Tri Hanh has painted about 500 other works; each work is a story or a specific event, following the flow of current events.
