Thailand closes schools due to impact of Typhoon Wipha

Although Typhoon Wipha has weakened into a tropical depression, the Thai Ministry of Education has announced the closure of schools in areas affected by Typhoon Wipha to ensure the safety of students and teachers. The decision was made as heavy rain, flash floods and strong winds continue to threaten the northern and northeastern regions of the country.

According to Mr. Anukool Pruksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, the Ministry of Education has directed local departments and schools at high risk of being affected by Typhoon Wipha to take timely preventive measures. Schools are allowed to decide to close if necessary.

The Thai government stressed that the top priority now is to ensure absolute safety for students, teachers and school staff in the unstable weather situation.

In addition to suspending classes, the Ministry of Education also asked schools to move teaching equipment and important items to higher floors to prevent flash floods. Large trees on school grounds should be pruned in advance to minimize the risk of falling due to strong winds.

As of July 23, 2025, Typhoon Wipha had weakened significantly as it moved into Laos, but still caused heavy rain and strong winds in many areas of Thailand.
