Faced with the continuing increase in hand, foot and mouth disease in the area, while treatment drugs are not enough, on June 14, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) continued to recommend that parents help their children prevent this disease.

Hand, foot and mouth disease in Ho Chi Minh City is on the rise.

Accordingly, hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common disease in children under 5 years old. The disease is most contagious if caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71). Most children with the disease will recover on their own. However, in some cases, the disease can progress severely with complications affecting the brain, heart, etc.

Children with HFMD will initially develop blisters. If the blisters are in the mouth, they will burst into ulcers, but blisters on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, knees, and buttocks usually do not burst and will gradually dry up. The course of the disease usually lasts from 5 to 7 days, possibly more than 10 days. After that, the blisters can dry up, stabilize, and heal on their own.

Parents need to pay attention to symptoms in children that may have TCM.

When taking care of children, it is necessary to closely monitor and detect early warning signs that the child is becoming seriously ill. At that time, the child must be taken to the hospital immediately because the time to save the child's life when there are complications to the brain is about 6-12 hours.

Signs of severe TCM: Usually, complications often appear on the 3rd - 5th day of the disease. The main sign is that the child's sleep pattern changes, startles, and fidgets. If it is mild, the child will be startled when falling asleep, and will be normal when sitting up to play. A slightly more severe level is when the child is startled and fidgets as soon as he or she lies down. More severe is when the child is still startled and fidgets when held in the arms...

How to take care of children with HFMD is mainly related to diet, because it is difficult for children to eat when they are sick. Pay attention to giving children liquid, easy-to-digest foods. If the mouth hurts a lot, you should see a doctor to get painkillers for the mouth. If you take good care of your child, he or she will recover in 5-7 days, changing his or her sleep. If you wait any longer, the child may have difficulty breathing, convulsions, and then a rapid pulse that cannot be detected.

3 clean to prevent TCM disease.

There is no vaccine to prevent HFMD. This is a disease transmitted through the digestive tract, so the most important thing is to maintain hygiene. The virus that causes the disease is abundant in saliva, ulcers, and blister fluid. The virus can survive on the surface of objects around the sick child. The child's hands or the hands of the caregiver when touching objects contaminated with the virus will carry the virus on their hands. If you put your hands on your eyes, nose, or mouth, you will bring the virus into your body.

Therefore, the most important prevention is to wash the hands of children and caregivers, and to clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched by hands. Caregivers need to ensure hand hygiene and wash their hands regularly to avoid spreading viruses to children.
