In an episode of the People by WTF podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Sam Altman called the trend of young people delaying having children to take care of their finances a “real problem.”
OpenAI CEO, who had her first child this year, expressed hope that when AGI emerges, society will enter a period of prosperity with “more abundance, more time, more resources and more energy.”
According to Altman, this will create an environment that is conducive to people returning to family and community values. “I think it is clear that family and community are two of the things that make us happiest, and I hope we will return to that,” he said.

When asked about his experience as a father, Altman described it as “the most important, meaningful, and fulfilling” thing he had ever done. He also described himself as being particularly addicted to children, revealing that in the first weeks, he constantly asked ChatGPT about every parenting issue.
He said that AI skills will be an indispensable asset for future generations: “My children will never be smarter than AI, but they will grow up with abilities far beyond our generation, able to do things we cannot imagine and will be very good at using AI.”
Altman isn’t the only tech CEO concerned about population. Elon Musk, founder of xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, has more than 14 children.
“The greatest danger to civilization is the declining birth rate,” Musk wrote on X in 2022. He has also repeatedly said that he is “doing everything we can to help solve the underpopulation crisis.”
AGI, which is theoretically capable of reasoning on par with humans, is considered the ultimate goal of leading AI companies.
For Altman, AGI is not just a technological race but also tied to a vision of a future where humans can spend more time with their families, raise the next generation and build strong communities.
