Chinese 'miracle drug' floods Vietnamese market, priced at only 30,000 VND/kg

Considered a "miracle drug", Chinese jujubes are flooding into Vietnamese markets and are being sold at unprecedentedly low prices, the lowest ever.

In recent years, jujubes have flooded the Vietnamese market in large quantities. Notably, despite being considered a “medicinal apple” or a “miracle fruit,” jujubes are becoming increasingly cheaper.

At this time, fresh or dried jujubes are sold everywhere in markets, stores and supermarkets. Accordingly, the price of fresh products is commonly at 30,000-70,000 VND/kg - the cheapest ever.

Having sold fresh jujubes for 7 years now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu - a fruit dealer in Cau Giay (Hanoi), admits that this Chinese "miracle fruit" is now the cheapest it has ever been.

The fresh jujubes she imports are packaged in styrofoam boxes. At the beginning of the season, the price was up to 130,000 VND/kg, then gradually decreased. In recent days, she has been selling jujubes in large quantities, at only 50,000 VND/kg for retail customers. For wholesale customers, the price of jujubes is only 160,000 VND/5kg box (about 32,000 VND/kg).

Ms. Nhu said that the amount of jujubes sold has increased sharply. It is the main season so the fruit is sweet and crunchy. In particular, the price of jujubes is very cheap, so it is more and more popular with consumers. This is also the reason why for nearly a month now, she has sold out about 500 boxes of jujubes to wholesale and retail customers every day.

According to Ms. Truong Thi Hieu, a saleswoman at a large fruit store chain in Hanoi, the price of persimmons is only one-third cheaper than the same period last year. Compared to the beginning of the season, the price has dropped to only half.

She cited that last year, the store imported 1.5kg canned fresh jujubes, grade A, for 250,000 VND/box. At the beginning of this season, this type of product cost 200,000-220,000 VND/box. Today, the same type of jujubes packed in 1.5kg boxes, but the price has dropped to only 95,000 VND/box.

“Therefore, the amount of jujubes sold has tripled compared to early September,” Ms. Hieu shared. Yesterday, orders for sales reached 1,500 boxes.

Ms. Hieu said that women are extremely fond of eating jujubes. Because this fruit originating from China is not only delicious but also advertised as “just eat 3 jujubes a day, you will not be afraid of aging for the rest of your life”.

Mr. Phan Van Binh, a fruit wholesaler in Lao Cai, said that jujubes have been in season since early July. On average, he sells 2-3 tons of them per day. Since late September, the amount of goods he sells to wholesalers in the provinces has reached around 4 tons per day.

“As a rule, the cheaper the price, the more customers buy,” he said. In the past two days, he has been selling jujubes wholesale at VND25,000/kg for 3A products packed in 5kg foam boxes, and 1A products at a wholesale price of only VND40,000/kg.

China has the largest jujube growing area in the world. In this country of a billion people, this fruit is considered a “miracle drug”, can be eaten directly, brewed into tea or used as an ingredient in many dishes.

The book on traditional Chinese medicine - Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, evaluates that eating a lot of red dates makes the body slim, healthy, and long-lived. Therefore, many medicines use dried red dates.

According to Western medicine, fresh jujubes are low in calories and high in fiber and antioxidants. Using this fruit can boost immunity and fight cancer cells, improve the digestive system...
