Paqueta was disappointed to receive a yellow card. |
In the 73rd minute at West Ham, referee Michael Oliver showed Paqueta a yellow card for a foul on Mikey Moore, after the midfielder had stopped a Tottenham counter-attack. The cameras captured Paqueta wiping away tears with his shirt, an emotional and surprised reaction to the referee's decision.
Referee Oliver deemed Paqueta's tackle worthy of a yellow card. Frustrated by the decision, the West Ham midfielder waved his arms in frustration. Referee Oliver then called him back to warn him about his behaviour, but Paqueta refused to approach the referee. His teammates rushed in to calm the situation.
Immediately after that, coach Graham Potter decided to take Paqueta off the field along with 3 other teammates in the 80th minute. At this point, the two teams were still tied 1-1. No more goals were scored in the remaining minutes.
The incident comes as Paqueta faces an FA investigation into alleged match-fixing. According to the Daily Mail , the FA hearing into the case has not been completed in about three weeks as expected. Paqueta will have to wait several more weeks to serve the investigation and appear in court.

The Brazilian midfielder is trying to clear himself of charges of deliberately getting booked and influencing betting results. If found guilty, Paqueta could be banned for life.
"We have been living this nightmare for two years and my husband has always been strong," Paqueta's wife, Duda Fournier, wrote on Instagram on May 4. "I just wish people would respect him. People are cruel and unjust, without knowing anything."
Potter insisted there was nothing unusual about Paqueta's reaction to his yellow card against Tottenham. "I think he and Tomas [Soucek] were just a little bit tired. They had a tough game and they were working hard. I haven't spoken to Lucas about it," he said.
