However, instead of increasing the chances of admission, spreading out wishes everywhere causes many candidates to fall into confusion, pressure and sometimes make the wrong choice.
There are candidates registering up to 152 wishes.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training , this year's university entrance exam nationwide had nearly 850,000 candidates registering more than 7.6 million admission wishes on the common admission system. On average, each candidate registered up to 9 wishes, far exceeding the number of previous years.
Meanwhile, according to Tuoi Tre Online 's research, the number of candidates registering for admission to universities this year has increased sharply compared to last year, especially at a school in Ho Chi Minh City, candidates registered more than 160,000 admission wishes.
Preliminary surveys from universities show that many candidates have registered for more than 100 applications. Notably, preliminary statistics show that at least 10 candidates have registered for between 125 and 152 applications.
Researching the information on the candidate's admission application, he registered up to 149 wishes, showing that this candidate "spread" his wishes across many schools with many different majors: electrical and electronic engineering technology; mechatronic engineering; economic law; logistics and supply chain management.
This candidate also has data in many different admission methods: considering high school graduation exam results; considering high school academic results (transcripts); using the results of competency assessment tests, thinking assessment organized by other units for admission; considering the results of the V-SAT exam...
Explaining these cases, a university admissions officer said: "The 2025 university admissions witnessed a situation where many students 'spread' hundreds of wishes. The reason comes from the mentality that the more the better, and it could also stem from changes in the admissions regulations."
Registered over 100 wishes for fear of failure
In fact, there are candidates who have registered hundreds of wishes but are still worried. Candidate T. shared: "I registered 112 wishes because I was afraid of failing. When I adjusted, I was really confused, not knowing which major was a priority, which major was just a backup. Finally, when I paid the application fee, I saw that the amount to pay was too large, while I mistakenly placed my favorite major in the 38th position."
Many candidates fall into the same situation. Most of them choose their aspirations not based on passion or personal ability, but simply "to be sure".
"I chose 102 options but still felt uneasy. Because I didn't understand how to convert percentiles, I didn't know what my rank would be, and I was afraid I would fail all of them" - candidate L. shared.
Candidate D. in Ho Chi Minh City shared: "I took the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment test and got more than 900 points. Referring to the benchmark scores of previous years in this method, I thought I would definitely be admitted to the major and school I wanted.
However, when the schools announced the conversion percentage of admission scores between admission methods, I was really worried because the high school graduation exam scores were not high.
Therefore, I have registered nearly 30 wishes for many majors, at different schools with the hope of passing the university entrance exam to the major I want."
Now reading the list of wishes registered on the system, D. realized that many of the majors he chose were not really his favorite, so he felt like he had chosen "too much".
What do the experts say?
According to experts, the phenomenon of "spreading wishes" is not new, but this year the situation has skyrocketed.
The reason comes not only from the fear of failing, but also from changes in admission regulations this year, especially the application of the percentile method and the complete elimination of early admission.
An admissions expert at a private school in Ho Chi Minh City said: "Allowing unlimited registration is to expand opportunities for candidates. But without careful advice, students can easily choose the wrong major or school, leading to inappropriate studies, having to change majors or drop out of school halfway."
If in previous years candidates could "reserve their place" in advance through early admission methods such as academic records, ability assessment scores or school priority admission, this year all opportunities are now limited to a single admission based on the ministry's virtual filtering data.
This change has increased pressure on candidates, causing many to choose to "register as much as possible" to... reduce anxiety.
"Last year, my sister and I got into our dream school early thanks to our transcripts. This year, I don't have that chance, so I just wrote down all the majors I thought I could get into, but actually I didn't know what I wanted to study," said S., a candidate in Da Nang .
