Speaking at the opening press conference to announce the "Vietnam Innovation Challenge 2025" program on the morning of March 14, Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai - Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC) - said that AI is transforming the world.

Therefore, the development of large-scale, high-quality, open-source Vietnamese datasets for AI training and evaluation has become an urgent priority. The goal of this year's program is to promote the development of the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Vietnam.

Dr. Tran Viet Hung, founder and CEO of AI for Vietnam, said that in the context of rapid AI development today, if Vietnam cannot take advantage of it, it will miss out on development opportunities. Research experts at "AI for Vietnam" found that for Vietnam to take advantage of AI, supporting Vietnamese language plays an important role.

Currently, Vietnamese training data in the AI field accounts for only 0.8% - a very small part of the input. Therefore, although the output of AI models has informational value, it does not fully convey Vietnamese language and culture. Therefore, the application of AI is still ineffective.

From this desire, Vietnamese AI experts around the world together established "AI for Vietnam" with the desire to bring Vietnamese into AI naturally without spending much time and investment resources. AI For Vietnam has officially joined the Global AI Alliance. The founding team consists of 4 experts including Dr. Tran Viet Hung, Le Viet Quoc, Vu Xuan Son, and Master To Dieu Lien.

The ViGen project originated from a tripartite collaboration between Meta Group, the National Innovation Center (NIC), and the organization "AI for Vietnam". The goal of the project is to make AI models support Vietnamese naturally and comprehensively from the core to unlock the potential of AI applications in Vietnam.

This project is working to create a high-quality open-source Vietnamese dataset to train, evaluate, and thereby improve the performance of large language models (LLMs), helping AI models better understand Vietnamese culture, context, and expressions.

The project is expected to enhance the presence of Vietnamese in the AI development process, while contributing to the rapid and sustainable development of the digital economy.

The National Innovation Center plays the role of the managing unit, coordinating and ensuring that the project is consistent with Vietnam's national goals. AI for Vietnam is the project implementation partner with technical and financial support from Meta Group. Strategic partners include Nvidia, Viettel and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Dr. Tran Viet Hung said that it is expected that this project will take about 3 years to complete the ecosystem.

Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai said that the ViGen project is in line with Resolution 57 of the Politburo to promote breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation. The ViGen project requires joint efforts from policy makers, research groups, researchers, developers, experts and users.

"Together, we will turn AI into a powerful tool for all Vietnamese people and make Vietnam a global AI powerhouse," Mr. Hoai emphasized.

Professor Yann LeCun, Vice President, Chief Artificial Intelligence Architect of Meta Group - who is known as one of the "fathers" of AI - assessed that the ViGen project and the Vietnam Innovation Challenge not only aim to promote technology, but also aim to build a comprehensive AI future, honoring and integrating Vietnam's unique cultural and linguistic heritage.
