19-year-old Czech tennis player Jakub Mensik wrote his own fairy tale when he defeated his idol and living legend of tennis, Novak Djokovic, to win his first ATP title at the Miami Open 2025.
With a 7-6, 7-6 victory, Mensik not only won the Masters 1000 title but also prevented Djokovic from reaching the milestone of 100 ATP titles.
Mensik was ranked 54th in the world before the tournament began. But in Miami, he showed incredible power, especially with a powerful serve that reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. In the final, which lasted two hours and three minutes, Mensik hit 14 aces and dropped just one serve.
Mensik's victory was made all the more special by the fact that he almost had to withdraw from the tournament due to a knee injury. He revealed that just an hour before his first match, he was about to sign a withdrawal form because the pain was too much.
Mensik thanks ATP physiotherapist and pays tribute to idol Djokovic
"A special thanks to one of the ATP physiotherapists, Alejandro. An hour before my first match here, I was holding a withdrawal slip because my knee was in too much pain. I was lucky because the umpire was having lunch at that time. Then I decided to go for a final treatment. And he did a miracle. Thanks to him, I was able to step out on the court. Thanks to him, I am here today," Mensik added.
After the match, Mensik could not hide his emotions when he sent his gratitude to his idol: "Novak, everyone knows that you are the one... the reason I am here. I grew up watching you play. I started playing tennis because of you. There is no more difficult challenge for a tennis player than to beat you in a final. Thank you for everything you have done for this sport. You are the greatest of all time."
The championship victory over Djokovic was the most beautiful moment of Mensik's young career. It was not only the championship trophy but also the emotional hug with his idol Djokovic right at the net after the match.
With this victory, Jakub Mensik has affirmed his talent and promises to go further on the path to conquering major titles. At the end of the tournament, the Czech player's ranking rose to 23rd in the world.
