Recently, a new study published by Dr. Vijay Kumar Malesu, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and KIIT University (India) on the medical website News Medical has further strengthened the scientific evidence of the benefits of sesame oil.

After analyzing five major studies on the active ingredients in sesame oil, the authors confirmed that this oil has the ability to support cardiovascular, neurological, liver, kidney health, control blood sugar, and protect the skin.

Optimal fat structure

Sesame oil has a unique fat composition, consisting of about 40% oleic acid, 44% linoleic acid and only about 20% saturated fat. This structure helps improve blood lipid composition, reducing total cholesterol, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing good cholesterol. The balance of fatty acids also helps maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, thereby reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and hypertension.

Beneficial bioactives

Sesame oil is rich in lignans (sesamin, sesamolin, sesamol), tocopherol (vitamin E) and phytosterols - substances with strong antioxidant activity, helping to reduce inflammation, control blood pressure, protect lipids, proteins and DNA from oxidative damage. Phytosterols also reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestine and support cell membrane function.

Cardiovascular, liver and kidney protection

Cardiovascular: Sesamin acts as a metabolic regulator, reducing bad cholesterol levels and increasing good cholesterol, helping to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, reducing vasoconstriction factors and preventing plaque formation.

Liver - kidney: In animal models, sesamin has shown the ability to restore fibrotic liver damage and acute kidney injury, contributing to maintaining liver and kidney function, according to News Medical .

Brain: Sesame oil helps protect neurons in diseases such as ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's, by reducing neuronal death and neuroinflammation.

Blood sugar: In diabetic patients, sesame oil supplementation for 8 weeks reduced fasting glucose, lowered HbA1c, improved insulin sensitivity, and improved blood sugar regulation.

Skin: Topical application of sesame oil speeds wound healing, reduces skin inflammation, prevents transepidermal water loss, and protects against UV rays.

According to Dr. Malesu, the combination of lignans, tocopherols, phytosterols and unsaturated fatty acids in sesame oil creates a synergistic effect, bringing significant benefits to the cardiovascular system, metabolism, liver, kidneys, skin and cognitive function. With a growing evidence base, sesame oil contributes to the prevention of many chronic diseases when used appropriately in the daily diet.
