For weeks, Donetsk and Toretsk have been the focus of heated fighting as Russia continues to launch attacks and Ukraine stands firm in its defense. Against this backdrop, Ukraine’s 12th Special Forces Brigade “Azov” repelled a large-scale Russian attack near the village of Katerynivka, achieving an important victory and successfully defending the strategic position.

In an official statement from an official source from the brigade, Russian forces mobilized infantry supported by armored vehicles to clear the way to Katerynivka. A video released by Azov shows the fierce defense, showing Russian tactics of combining armored fire with infantry attacks, trying to break the battle line.

The fighting took place in the context of the Russian army increasing the intensity of its attacks in Donetsk. Instead of small attacks like in the previous period, they began to organize coordinated attacks, showing their intention to gain overwhelming advantage at some key points. This made the Toretsk battlefield one of the hottest areas in recent times.

Faced with this pressure, the Azov forces deployed reconnaissance and attack UAVs to neutralize Russian vehicles. The precision strikes destroyed many pieces of equipment and blocked the enemy's escape route. The combination of ground firepower and UAV technology created a decisive advantage, turning the defense system into a "firewall" that paralyzed the enemy.

As the armored vehicles were destroyed, the Russian infantry quickly fell into chaos, with many soldiers fleeing due to lack of support. Ukrainian UAVs continued to pursue, attacking scattered groups of troops, causing the Russian formation to collapse. This is clear evidence that drone technology is playing an increasingly important role in modern warfare.

Despite the defeat, Russia has not given up on its ambition to capture Katerynivka. Some sources added that new attacks are being launched to put pressure on the Ukrainian defense line. The high intensity shows that Moscow is determined to expand its foothold in the Toretsk area, which is considered a gateway to further advances into the Donetsk core.

According to the report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on August 17, 2025 alone, the Russian Army carried out nine attacks on Ukrainian positions. Official war maps of the same day showed that the Toretsk area was surrounded by many attacks, putting considerable defensive pressure on the Ukrainian army.

Notably, earlier in August, the 28th Mechanized Brigade and its allies had defeated a Russian tank attack near Toretsk. The series of successful defensive battles demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of Ukrainian units, even in the face of large-scale coordinated attacks.

Military experts say the change in Russian tactics is a sign that they are looking to make a breakthrough with concentrated firepower. On the morning of August 17, reconnaissance from the 3rd Mechanized Battalion spotted two Russian tanks and infantry entering the combat zone, signaling an effort to expand the scale of the attack after months of testing with small groups.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian paratroopers continued to play an important role. The 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade regained control of the village of Zolotyi Kolodiaz and stopped another breakthrough in Dobropillia. These victories helped to strengthen the defense line, limiting the risk of Russia expanding its offensive corridor in Donetsk.

Ukraine’s continued holding of its ground in the face of overwhelming pressure demonstrates the effectiveness of the “flexible warfare” tactic combining mechanized infantry, special forces, and UAVs. Analysts say this combination not only helps Ukraine defend firmly but also wears down enemy forces, making Russia pay dearly for each step forward.

The situation in Toretsk is expected to remain tense as Russia may send more forces to search for a breakthrough, while Ukraine consolidates its fortifications and increases its UAVs to maintain the initiative. The victory in Katerynivka is not only a tactical success for Azov, but also demonstrates the adaptability of the Ukrainian Army in a war of attrition.
