After five years of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and necessary renovations, the Johannesburg library officially reopened to the public on August 9, 2025, marking a new chapter in serving the community.
The grand opening ceremony, which coincided with South African National Women's Day, was presided over by Johannesburg Mayor Dada Moreo and local officials.
As one of the cultural and intellectual icons of South Africa's largest city, the Johannesburg Library has a history closely linked to the urban development of Johannesburg.
With more than 250,000 registered members, the library is not only a repository of knowledge but also an important community center.
In the daily lives of Johannesburg residents, libraries play a pivotal role as a "treasure trove of wisdom," promoting equitable education , preserving cultural heritage and supporting personal development.
People can borrow books, participate in reading programs, seminars and use the new symphony digital library system deployed from June 2025, making it easier to search, reserve and manage documents./.
