Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway will be expanded to 8-10 lanes. |
Launch a series of projects
Yesterday (August 19), Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) started construction to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway from 4 lanes to 8 - 10 lanes. Of which, the 4.8 km section from the Ring Road 2 intersection (Ho Chi Minh City) to the Ring Road 3 intersection will be expanded from 4 lanes to 8 lanes; the 14.7 km section from the Ring Road 3 intersection to the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway intersection will be expanded from 4 lanes to 10 lanes.
The project has a total investment of VND14,945 billion and is expected to be completed in December 2026. The Long Thanh Bridge expansion will be completed in December 2026 and the remaining items will be completed in March 2027.
This is the latest development in the launch of bridge and road projects connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Dong Nai , especially the connection to Long Thanh airport.
Along with the expansion of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, the two localities are discussing the construction of three large bridges, with an investment capital of up to thousands of billions of VND.
Regarding Cat Lai Bridge, Ho Chi Minh City recently proposed Dong Nai to study the investment plan under the public-private partnership (PPP) method for the entire project, including the bridge and the approach roads on both sides of the bridge. Particularly, the section from km6+300 to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway will study a separate investment project, with the participation of state capital to serve as a basis for comparison and selection of appropriate investment plans.
Regarding Phu My 2 Bridge, the two sides agreed on the length of the approach road from Dong Nai to Lien Cang Road. However, Ho Chi Minh City requested Dong Nai to study and extend the route on Dong Nai side to promote the effectiveness of the project.
For Dong Nai 2 Bridge, the two localities are coordinating to review the scale, route direction and related planning projects to find optimal solutions.
If the above 3 bridges are built, it will strengthen the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai with many directions, significantly reducing the load on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway.
Many businesses are interested and propose investment.
The Ministry of Construction has just issued a document proposing to the Prime Minister to assign the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to be the investor of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway project. According to the Ministry of Construction, this plan will help to soon deploy the railway connecting Tan Son Nhat airport with Long Thanh airport, ensuring consistency and synchronization in construction, operation and maximum exploitation of land funds around the project area; increasing the initiative of the locality in implementing the project.
Investment in the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line is considered urgent as Long Thanh airport is expected to operate commercial flights in 2026.
After Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW of the Politburo on private economic development was issued, many private enterprises were interested in proposing to invest in a number of railway lines connecting to Long Thanh airport.
In particular, Truong Hai Group (Thaco) proposed to invest in the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line; DonaCoop Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company - VinaCapital Group proposed to invest in the Suoi Tien - Long Thanh metro line under the PPP form, BT contract form.
In addition, the consortium of Dai Dung Group - Construction Corporation No. 1 and Hoa Phat Group proposed to participate as the EPC general contractor (design, construction, equipment supply) for the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Phu, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, when Long Thanh airport is put into operation, it is necessary to consider the connection plan by multimodal transport from Ho Chi Minh City to the airport, such as highway, metro, railway, rapid bus... At that time, passengers will travel conveniently, regional connections will be optimized, turning the airport into a driving force for economic and urban development. Therefore, investing in railway routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh airport is very urgent.
Sharing the same view, Dr. Tran Quang Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Economics and Management, said that the proposal of private enterprises to participate in investing in railway projects is a positive sign, showing that Vietnamese enterprises are fully capable of implementing large projects. Accordingly, the Government and localities need to promote administrative procedure reform and have attractive enough mechanisms to attract investors.
