Thailand women's team lost 1-3 to Vietnam, accepting 4th place in the 2025 ASEAN Women's Football Championship,” Matichon newspaper wrote about the match at Lach Tray Stadium on the afternoon of August 19.

Matichon and Thai newspapers in general are resigned to the inferiority of "Chaba Kaew" (nickname of the Thai women's team) when facing the Vietnamese women's team .

In the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship, Thailand lost to Vietnam in both direct confrontations.

The third-place match was the fourth consecutive defeat of the Thai women's team against the Vietnamese girls - counting in official tournaments.

More broadly, in the last 8 matches, Vietnam women have 6 wins and 2 draws.

Over the past decade , Vietnamese women's football has clearly dominated Thailand in most official confrontations.

Thailand had only 2 wins in official regional tournaments before 2016 ( both SEA Games), and since then have been completely unable to overcome Vietnam.

After the defeat, Matichon quoted coach Futoshi Ikeda admitting that " the Thai women's team lacks experience and is urgently correcting mistakes towards the 2025 SEA Games" .

The first Japanese coach sent congratulations to the Vietnamese team and coach Mai Duc Chung .

“Our team has many young players who still need to gain more experience. There were still many mistakes in the match, we have to continue to fix and develop further,” he explained.

Coach Ikeda emphasized that the next big goal of “Chaba Kaew” is the 33rd SEA Games taking place at the end of this year in Thailand.

“We still have time before the SEA Games. The important thing is to select the best players to participate in the tournament, with the aim of completing the set goals.

Not only are teams in the ASEAN region developing, but women's football around the world is also making strong progress."

The 54-year-old coach affirmed that the Thai women's team will focus on long-term preparation to compete for the SEA Games gold medal with the Vietnamese women's team.

“We want to prepare as thoroughly as possible to enhance our potential and aim for future success. The current squad still has time to improve before entering the SEA Games.

There are still many points to overcome, but we will do our best to become stronger."

The 33rd SEA Games will take place later this year in Thailand. The Vietnamese women's team holds the record with four consecutive championships, and has always reached at least the finals since 2001.
