If this information is accurate, it will be a big challenge for Apple to make the iPhone 17 the most popular model, especially when the company is focusing on higher-end versions.

Apple will equip the basic iPhone 17 with the same A18 chip

While this isn’t the first time Apple has used “last year’s” chips for its base models, it has previously offered customers last year’s Pro processors in the base model. Now, if users want the latest technology, they’ll have to opt for at least the rumored iPhone 17 Air or one of the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Apple wants to direct users to iPhone 17 Pro

This information does not bring much impression for the basic iPhone 17 model. Previously, leaked sources said that this year's major design improvement will only apply to the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models, as these are the only models with a new camera design. This suggests that Apple will probably only make minimal changes to this version.

While keeping the price the same might be a reasonable excuse amid tariff tensions, there seems to be only one major improvement in the iPhone 17: if users are interested in ProMotion technology or Always-On Display.

Still, the iPhone Pro models are expected to be more expensive due to geopolitical tensions, while the new Air needs to be compelling enough to encourage users to upgrade. With less impressive battery life and just a single main camera, at least the new ultra-thin design and updated chip could help the base iPhone 17 appeal to a wider audience.
