According to a report from the Lao Cai Department of Population and Family Planning, in the first 5 months of 2024, there were 4,802 cases screened prenatally and newbornly in the province, of which 245 high-risk cases were detected and managed, monitored, and counseled.
Of which, prenatal screening was 2,434 cases (Bao Thang district was the locality that performed the most, accounting for 54.72%) and newborn screening was 2,368 cases (Si Ma Cai was the district that performed the most, accounting for 65.97%).

To continue implementing the project of prenatal and newborn screening effectively, currently the whole province has 12 units providing prenatal and newborn screening services, of which the provincial level includes the Provincial General Hospital and the Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the district level includes 9 public general hospitals and 1 private general hospital (Hung Thinh General Hospital); the commune level has 64/152 health stations performing newborn screening sampling.
Prenatal screening and newborn screening are routine testing programs for pregnant women in the first 3 months, the middle 3 months and within the first month after birth to detect early fetuses and newborns at risk of genetic diseases, thereby detecting, diagnosing and treating early abnormalities of the fetus while still in the womb and immediately after birth, thereby providing timely interventions to help the fetus and newborn develop normally and healthily, contributing to improving population quality.
