Many people are shocked when the price of durian in domestic stores and supermarkets is too high, even higher than the price of Vietnamese durian sold in China.
Recently, a Facebook account with 9,000 followers posted an article about her going to a supermarket in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, stopping at the counter. durian I was going to buy it but was shocked by the price tag.
Accordingly, a box of 3-segment durian - including 1 large segment and 2 small segments - costs up to 250,000 VND. This person cited the price of durian in China with 3 large segments with a converted price of only 177,000 VND and then posted a status wondering: Why is the place where durian is produced selling it at a much higher price than the place where durian is imported?
After 2 days, the article received many shares and comments, including both agreement and disagreement. Some people said that the supermarket sold at a high price, but others analyzed factors such as breed, quality, weight, to have different prices. There was an account from China that said it had just bought a 3 kg durian for 630,000 VND.

Reporters conducted a survey at a number of supermarkets and stores in Ho Chi Minh City and found that durian prices are still at a "luxury" level for consumers, with a huge difference compared to the price at the farm and the selling price at outside businesses.
In Co.opMart Rach Mieu (Phu Nhuan district), Ri 6 durian from the West costs 166,500 VND/kg (whole fruit) and 549,200 VND/kg of flesh (also known as Ri 6 shelled durian).
Some prepackaged durian boxes cost up to more than 200,000 VND, some boxes contain only 1 segment. For example, 1 segment 426 gram price over 230,000 VND, 1 segment of 394 grams price over 216,000 VND...
With whole durian, each fruit has a traceability stamp. When scanning the code, it shows information that the durian is from a farmer in Ben Tre grown according to VietGap standards; information about harvest date, expected ripening date, total harvest volume...

At the Farmers Market store system, there are 3 Ri 6 durian products: Fresh durian pulp priced at 676,000 VND/kg, currently on sale at 516,000 VND/kg; frozen durian pulp priced at nearly 500,000 VND/kg and fresh whole durian grade 2 priced at 484,000 VND/fruit (from 1.5-2.2 kg) currently on sale at 371,800 VND/fruit.
Explaining the above prices, Mr. Vo Thanh Loc, Marketing Director of Farmers store chain, said that "you get what you pay for". Despite the high prices, these products are still in the best-selling category.
According to Mr. Loc, with Ri 6 durian, the selling price depends on the growing area. Usually, the price of durian grown in the West is higher than in the East and Central Highlands, and depending on the quality of each region, the price is also different.

"From the garden to the point of sale, the price will add 15%-20% weight loss cost, to compensate for the unripe fruit, on fire "The profit margin is 10%, the profit and discount is about 30%, the tax is 5%... so the retail price is more than double the wholesale price, which is reasonable. With durian pulp, the selling price is usually 3.5 times higher than the whole fruit because the pulp ratio is only 25-30%" - Mr. Loc analyzed.
According to Mr. Loc, durian suppliers in the system must "cover" everything so that customers who pay high prices can buy delicious products, be satisfied and come back.
In addition to stores and supermarkets, in Ho Chi Minh City there are many places selling durian, including street vendors and sidewalk vendors, with many different prices, commonly from 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg for whole fruit, making it difficult for consumers who are not familiar with the difference.
