TPO - Leaders of Hau Giang province have just had a meeting with investors and contractors... on the progress of two expressway projects in the Western region, the vertical and horizontal axis, passing through the province.
Hau Giang province has two expressway projects with a total length of about 100km. Of which, Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway (vertical axis) is 63km and Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway (horizontal axis) is 37km. To date, the province has basically completed compensation, support and resettlement for the projects.
Mr. Mai Van Tan - Director of Hau Giang Department of Transport, investor of component project 3, Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway - said that the project has currently disbursed more than 1,400 billion VND, reaching more than 51% of the allocated capital. The project's progress is currently about 9% behind schedule.
According to Mr. Tan, the reason for the project delay is that the contractor only focused on constructing bridges with access roads. In package 2, the public service roads are not yet clear and there are many small canals and rural bridges, so large equipment cannot move to the construction site...

According to the contractor's representative, although the locality has made efforts to clear the land, the construction has affected the irrigation system of the people. If the construction continues, it will clog the irrigation system, affecting the people's production. In addition, the package is still facing difficulties with sand filling. The contractor pledged to speed up the construction of bridges on the route, ensuring disbursement according to plan.
The contractor representative said that the contractor has only achieved 30% of the allocated disbursement output this year, due to the lack of sand for construction on the route. At the mines on the Tien River, the reserves are good but the usage plan is in the period of 2026 - 2030, so it is proposing to exploit the sand reserves during the project construction phase ( 2021-2025). The contractor will focus on laying the girders of 12 bridges on the route and completing 16km of public roads... to ensure progress and complete disbursement.
Regarding the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project, Mr. Tran Van Thi - Director of My Thuan Project Management Board (investor) - said that the project will be completed by the end of 2025. From now until the end of the year, contractors must complete the work of loading the roadbed and bridges on the main route.
Currently, contractors are focusing on accelerating construction at the site, however, the project is still facing difficulties in sand sources, the project has received additional sand transferred from the horizontal highway. However, according to Mr. Thi, the sand distribution only reached more than 1,000 m3/day, from the beginning of 2025, contractors will return the amount of sand that has been transferred to the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang highway project.

Mr. Dong Van Thanh - Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee - said that the expressway projects passing through the area are key projects. Putting the projects into operation soon will shorten travel time between localities in the province and between Hau Giang and other provinces in the region. The locality will coordinate with all parties to share the common difficulties of sand material shortage.
Hau Giang Provincial Party Secretary Nghiem Xuan Thanh said that Hau Giang always accompanies and considers the contractor's task as the province's. All parties need to focus all resources with the highest determination, promptly complete the disbursement of public investment capital, and ensure the timely implementation of the two expressway projects.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project (part of the North - South Eastern Expressway project, phase 2021-2025) is 110km long, passing through 5 provinces/cities (Can Tho, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Ca Mau), with a total investment of more than 27,500 billion VND.
The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project is 188km long, passing through 4 provinces/cities (An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang), with a total investment of nearly 44,700 billion VND. These are 2 national key traffic projects and are currently the largest in the Mekong Delta.
