Singer Tran Tung Anh, a rare "genderless" (castrato) voice of Vietnam, has just won the Special Prize - Thanh Am Award at the 2024 Young Music Talent Search Competition in China.

Sharing with the press on July 31, Tung Anh said that the competition was organized by the Zhejiang-Hangzhou Conservatory of Music with the participation of 600 contestants from China and many other countries.

The competition is sponsored by the system of famous Chinese conservatories and international music schools such as Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts...

The singer from Bac Giang has been practicing and preparing for the competition for more than 3 months, with the guidance and advice of Master, Meritorious Artist Lan Anh.

Tung Anh participated in the Youth Opera category with a mash-up of famous Vietnamese chamber songs: “Spring in the war zone,” “The girl sharpening spikes,” “The bird that announces good news,” “The ferryman on the Po Co river,” and “The Lo river epic.”

This mash-up was arranged by Tran Tung Anh to suit his voice and musical style to participate in the competition with the desire to bring the quintessence of Vietnamese chamber music to "show off" to international friends.

He performed with his two natural voices, a genderless voice and a real male voice.

“The competition had so many contestants that it made me a bit overwhelmed. I always told myself to do my best and be confident for the country. Luckily, when I performed with my two natural voices, I heard many surprised 'wows' from the audience, which made me much more confident,” Tran Tung Anh shared.

Following his success at the Chinese music competition, on August 2-3, Tran Tung Anh will be one of the delegates from Luc Nam district, his hometown, to attend the Congress of the Youth Union of Bac Giang province./.

Tran Tung Anh was born in 1995 and started his singing career in 2017 when he participated in The Voice. A year later, Tran Tung Anh decided to move to the South to find a suitable path to develop his singing career. He participated in the music game shows "Tuyet Dinh Song Ca" and "Guong Mat Than Quen" in 2019 and attracted attention with his rare castrato voice. Tung Anh was nominated for "New Artist of the Year" at the 18th Dedication Awards in 2024.

Singer and lecturer Phuc Tiep (Vietnam National Academy of Music) commented: "In the past, the British Royal Family did not allow female singers on stage, so male singers had to be trained from a young age to impersonate women when performing. Tran Tung Anh is a rare case with a castrato voice, and training such a voice is very difficult."
