Teachers go hand in hand with technology

GD&TĐ - In the professional training content to prepare for the new school year, many schools spend a certain amount of time "popularizing AI" (artificial intelligence) for staff and teachers.

Although AI cannot replace the role and position of teachers in schools, education cannot lag behind technology.

The need and also the greatest concern of teachers in training sessions is how to create commands to use AI, and which tools are suitable. However, technology changes every day at a dizzying speed, so in order not to be left behind, teachers not only need to understand deeply but also need to know how to use AI effectively, without reducing the role of self-study and mastering knowledge of students.

In the context that students begin to approach AI and see it as a tool to support the learning process, AI does not make teaching, testing, and assessment easier for teachers, but on the contrary, forces teachers to learn many new skills in organizing classroom activities.

In reality, there is a phenomenon of students gradually losing the ability to think independently, not being able to connect data and solve problems due to over-reliance on AI. AI tools that provide instant answers easily make it difficult for learners to remember, deepen knowledge or develop their own arguments.

Therefore, using AI in each lesson, in the process of assigning individual and group assignments is not enough, teachers must also help students use AI creatively and in accordance with ethical standards.

Teachers need to design exercises that encourage students to use AI as a tool to support, not replace, the entire thinking process. For example, instead of assessing answers, teachers can grade students’ presentation, reasoning, and analytical skills to assess the thinking process during the assignment.

Only when teachers master technology and pedagogy can they create lessons that encourage learners to question, analyze, and criticize information.

In many forums on active teaching methods and teaching technology, experts emphasize the need for teachers to be solid in their expertise and pedagogical methods before considering the use of technology to support teaching activities. Technology will not create any positive changes, if not counterproductive, if teachers do not use it based on core educational principles.

In such a perspective, equipping both teachers and students with digital competencies needs to be implemented early at all levels of education. In the age of digital technology , the challenge of the educational environment is not technological competencies but the ability to perceive and respond to technology.

The role of teachers as mentors, motivators and learning supporters is essential. Teaching, after all, is the art of understanding the psychology of learners, and from there choosing the form of knowledge transmission that learners can most easily absorb. The teaching process of a teacher, therefore, also brings empathy, social-emotional skills as well as the ability to promote creativity in learners - things that AI cannot replace.

From here, it is also necessary to raise the issue of the need for dialogue and connection between educators and technology experts. This will help teachers proactively approach and take advantage of AI to improve student learning outcomes, promote equity in the classroom, but at the same time still maintain their role in the learning, development and growth of students.
