Global food prices rose to their highest level in two years in April, suggesting that uncertainties related to US tariffs are starting to weigh on international trade.

According to Bloomberg news agency, the United Nations crude commodity price index in April 2025 reached 128.3, up 1% compared to the previous month, bringing prices to the highest level since March 2023.

Although well below the 2022 peak, the increase reflects the possibility that food prices could rebound after a period of decline.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations stated that “currency fluctuations have impacted price developments in global markets, while adjustments in tariff policies have increased market volatility.”

Meanwhile, the prices of cereals, meat and milk all increased, pushing the index higher.

Price volatility for agricultural commodities, stemming from President Donald Trump's tariff moves and retaliatory measures from US trading partners, was flagged earlier this year.

Although some tariffs have been suspended for 90 days, global markets have been affected by the US's reciprocal tariff policy in recent weeks./.
