In the 90+7 minute of extra time, striker Wu Lei took advantage of a mistake after a pass from midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc to shoot past goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, sealing a 2-0 victory for China.
This victory helped the Chinese team continue to increase the number of wins against the Vietnamese team to 8 out of 9 times they have faced each other since 1997.
The only time the Chinese team failed was in the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup, when they lost to Vietnam with a score of 1-3 at My Dinh Stadium.
Wu Lei's goal also helped him make history, with 31 goals for the national team, equaling the all-time scoring record of legend Liu Haiguang for the billion-people country.
Speaking after the match, the captain of the Chinese team excitedly shared: "The captain's armband makes me feel my responsibility is heavier. I am very grateful for the trust of the coach as well as the support of my teammates.
Two months ago, we didn't play well. I hope this month will be better and I hope to win more. The first half was really bad, but in the second half, we controlled the game better."
Wu Lei added: "I am very grateful to the fans. Even though the Chinese team's results were not good and their performance made them unhappy, the fans still came to cheer for us every time the national team played."
