Choosing literature materials other than textbooks for testing and evaluation allows teachers and students to be creative and limits rote learning, but requires teachers to invest time in research and careful consideration so as not to confuse students but also not to be superficial, easy, and unable to classify students.
According to the official dispatch guiding the implementation of secondary education tasks for the 2024-2025 school year issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, there are a number of specific requirements for testing and evaluating Literature. That is, secondary and high schools need to avoid using texts and excerpts learned in textbooks as test materials, assessing reading comprehension and writing skills in periodic tests.
In addition, assessment must be carried out in accordance with regulations, not exceeding the requirements of the program, and periodic testing and assessment must be enhanced through practical exercises, learning projects, etc.
In addition, schools also need to strengthen the construction of question banks and test matrices according to the requirements of the subject program; prepare 9th grade students to get acquainted with the orientation of the entrance exam for grade 10, and 12th grade students to get acquainted with the orientation of the high school graduation exam.
Recently, the mid-semester I essay topic of Mac Dinh Chi High School (HCMC) received great attention from the public when it mentioned a very current issue. The essay topic also surprised by its brevity, requiring students to write an essay on the current youth lifestyle. Many students expressed their interest and said that this issue easily evokes emotions, easily expresses personal perspectives and gives vivid examples from the fact that some people photoshop receipts, falsely declare donations for typhoon Yagi relief, the trend of virtual living showing off a luxurious life but in reality it is "borrowed houses, rented cars"...
Ms. Hoang Thi Tu Anh - Literature teacher at Vietnam - Poland High School (Hanoi) assessed that the exam questions are topical, quickly capturing aspects of social life with prominent phenomena that have been of particular interest to young people recently. The very real-life language will not make it difficult for students but still ensure that students can be classified when they have ideas, convincing evidence, and coherent and fluent writing. "The exam questions are associated with new, practical topics that appear in the direction of change of the 2018 General Education Program, which is to bring lessons into life. The structure of the high school graduation exam also has changes to help students develop their abilities and freely create," said Ms. Tu Anh.
In addition, in terms of expertise, some opinions suggested that when included in the exam, there should be a clear explanation of the terms, especially new terms that have not been included in the Vietnamese Dictionary to avoid misunderstandings or controversy about the reading comprehension level of the exam. The exam structure compared to the regular mid-term exam has also changed when there is no Vietnamese section to fully test the students' abilities. The exam time is also shorter than the regulations of Circular 22 on the assessment of secondary and high school students of the Ministry of Education and Training, which requires periodic assessments for subjects with more than 70 periods/year to be from 60 - 90 minutes, for specialized subjects up to 120 minutes while this exam only lasts 45 minutes.
From here, experts believe that teachers can be flexible in testing and evaluating students while still evaluating comprehensively according to the requirements of the subject. The need to carefully select materials has been emphasized many times by management agencies and education experts. However, in reality, there can still be mistakes because with their subjective opinions, teachers can unintentionally choose inappropriate materials such as those that are offensive or too easy, superficial, or too sophisticated...
Mr. Ho Tan Nguyen Minh - Literature teacher at Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted (Phu Yen) commented that when teachers and students are not confined to a few texts in textbooks, it will be beneficial for creativity, limiting the situation of "teachers guessing the questions, students learning by heart", the situation of parrot-like learning, memorization... It is important that when choosing materials, it is important to pay close attention not to choose according to teachers' preferences but to choose suitable materials for students. Accordingly, the selected materials must be coherent, clear, suitable for the ability, age-appropriate, and ensure good customs.
