From its glorious feats, the Van Tuong Victory has always been an endless source of inspiration, spreading the flame of patriotism, urging young people to continue the tradition in the cause of building and defending the homeland.
Heroic victory in community memory
Mr. Ngo Thanh Trang, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, former guerrilla leader of Binh Dong commune, recalls Tan Hy ferry - where he and his comrades secretly ambushed and destroyed the enemy, capturing many weapons, opening the way for a series of successive victories. During the reconnaissance raid by the US Marine battalion, he and his comrades eliminated 25 enemies from the battle.
“We went through many bombs and bullets. Many comrades were left behind forever. But with strong faith, we kept every inch of our homeland. The victory of Van Tuong will last forever!”, he emotionally shared.
At Ngoc Huong Red Soil Hill, the monument records the victory on August 18, 1965: Platoon 2, Company 2, Battalion 60, Regiment 1 fought tenaciously in close combat, forcing the enemy to cluster, destroying about 80 of them, and holding the position.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, former Deputy Platoon Leader of the Firepower Platoon, still remembers clearly: "We let the enemy get really close before opening fire, then bravely engaged in close combat, turning passive into active to win."
On the Loc Tu trench, one of the eight relic sites in the Van Tuong complex, the remains of an M48 tank, the “pride” of the US army, which was burned by Company 1, Battalion 40, Regiment 1 of the Liberation Army, are still preserved. This artifact has become a living testament, reminding today’s generation of the value of peace and the responsibility to protect the Fatherland.
Ms. Vo Thi Chi (79 years old, Van Tuong commune) recalled: During the battle, the local army and people relied on the terrain, built solid fortifications, and together with the stubborn troops, stopped the enemy's advance. Tanks, armored vehicles, and American marines were all broken, hundreds of enemies were destroyed. "That was the strength of the village spirit, the army and people were of one mind, everyone was determined to protect their homeland," she said emotionally.
“Red Address” fosters patriotism
These days, along with veterans, many students, union members and young people come to the Van Tuong Victory Museum to show their gratitude and learn. Le Van Kieu, a member of the An Loc Nam village union, emotionally shared: “Each artifact here takes me back in time, clearly feeling the sacrifice and courage of previous generations. Following the example of previous generations, I will strive to study and practice to contribute to building my homeland.”
In today's peaceful atmosphere, Van Tuong's youth are always proud of the great victory of the past. Mr. Vo Thanh Dat, Secretary of Van Tuong Commune Youth Union, said: The commune Youth Union regularly organizes trips for members and young people to the historical sites, helping young people better understand the history of the struggle for national liberation, thereby fostering patriotism and responsibility to the community.
“We are grateful to the previous generation who sacrificed their blood and bones for national independence. Today’s young generation must continue the tradition, preserve the achievements, and contribute to making our homeland and country more and more prosperous,” he affirmed.
Van Tuong Victory Museum was put into use in 2005, and has been upgraded and renovated with 132 photo documents, 56 artifacts and many valuable documents about historical battles. Thanks to this investment, the Museum has become an attractive destination, meeting the needs of sightseeing and experience of people and tourists.
Mr. Truong Ngoc Nam, a tour guide at the Museum, is always proud to tell visitors stories about the heroic land: “Each artifact is associated with a story, each story is associated with a person, a family. When explaining, I feel like I am reliving the heroic atmosphere of the past.”
Not only stopping at sightseeing activities, the Veterans Association of Van Tuong commune also maintains many forms of traditional education for the younger generation on the occasion of holidays and anniversaries.
Meetings, community activities, and visits to relics become bridges between the past and the present, between the generations of fathers and sons and daughters today. Through this, history is not only preserved in the Museum, but also spreads to every family, every home, strengthening the solidarity of the whole community.
