Farmers in Chau Thanh A district fertilize summer-autumn rice at the seedling stage to help the rice plants grow quickly.

After harvesting the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop, Mr. Nguyen Van Chau and farmers in the rice field in Hamlet 4A, Tan Hoa Commune, Chau Thanh A District, continued to clean the fields. When ensuring the isolation period between the two rice crops, they proceeded to plant the 2025 Summer-Autumn rice crop according to the crop calendar of the local Department of Agriculture and Environment, and simultaneously planted the same rice crop in the same field. Currently, the rice fields here are nearly 30 days old and are growing well.

Walking around more than 1 hectare of Summer-Autumn rice (OM 5451 variety) of his family, Mr. Chau shared: “In the last Winter-Spring rice crop, I sold rice for only 6,400 VND/kg (Dai Thom 8 rice variety), down 1,600 VND/kg compared to the same period. Although I am sad because of the decrease in profits, I will not neglect this Summer-Autumn rice crop. With the determination to continue to boost production, since planting the Summer-Autumn rice crop, I and the people here have always actively taken care of the rice plants, thanks to which the occurrence of harmful organisms has been low, and the rice plants have grown well. Farmers have high expectations that Vietnam's upcoming rice export market will be more favorable in terms of output and selling price, so that the purchase price of rice from the people in the upcoming Summer-Autumn harvest will be raised, contributing to improving the income of the people."

According to the records of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Chau Thanh A district, up to now, farmers in the district have planted 6,570 hectares, reaching 100.92% of the plan. There are 2 rice varieties that farmers in Chau Thanh A district prioritize for cultivation in this year's Summer-Autumn rice crop, namely OM 18 and OM 5451. Currently, rice fields are concentrated in the seedling and tillering stages. Regarding SVGH, it is currently recorded that about 1,500 hectares of Summer-Autumn rice are infected, with some main objects such as: Brown planthopper, golden apple snail, mice, rice blast disease, thrips, small leaf roller, striped spot disease, weeds, ... However, according to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Chau Thanh A district, the density and infection rate of harmful organisms in rice fields are only at a low level, so the possibility of damage is insignificant because farmers are always proactive in preventing them from the beginning of the crop season.

Mr. Le Van Khoa, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Chau Thanh A district, said: Thanks to good propaganda and mobilization work, people in the district actively sowed the Summer-Autumn rice crop, thereby helping the locality exceed the plan in terms of sown area. This is the first important factor to create a premise for the district's Department of Agriculture and Environment to direct production to achieve success in all aspects of this year's Summer-Autumn rice crop. In particular, in the face of many fluctuations in the rice consumption market, the solution that the district's Department of Agriculture and Environment has set out is to focus on supporting science and technology to help people reduce investment costs, increase productivity, thereby increasing profits.

One of the models that helps people reduce production costs, contribute to increasing the value of rice grains and meet the export market demand is that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Chau Thanh A district is currently encouraging people to cultivate according to the production process of the high-quality rice area project. Evidence is at Phuoc Loc Agricultural Cooperative (HTX), in Truong Long Tay commune, Chau Thanh A district; in the recent winter-spring rice crop, the Cooperative linked to produce 30 hectares of rice seeds according to the model "Smart rice cultivation towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions", and at the same time linked with enterprises in purchasing output products with rice prices higher than the market price by about 1,000 VND/kg. According to the Cooperative's assessment, the rice yield in the winter-spring crop reached about 7.5 tons/ha (1,000m2), higher than the rice yield outside the model by 200-300kg/ha. Promoting the achieved success, in this Summer-Autumn rice crop, the leaders of Phuoc Loc Agricultural Cooperative continue to encourage members of the Cooperative to replicate the model to bring high efficiency in rice cultivation for the people.

Mr. Tran Trung Kien, Director of Phuoc Loc Agricultural Cooperative, in Truong Hiep A hamlet, Truong Long A commune, Chau Thanh A district, said: “Farmers producing according to the high-quality rice process all apply the sowing method with the amount of rice seeds 50kg/ha; at the same time apply the water drainage technique according to the principle of alternating wet and dry; apply fertilizer reasonably and balanced; use the rice leaf color chart to adjust the appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer; manage integrated pests and collect straw from the field with a straw roller. In addition, farmers also apply mechanization in many stages of cultivation, thereby reducing labor. Currently, the cooperative's Summer-Autumn rice crops are in the seedling and tillering stages, the rice plants are growing well.”

Mr. Le Van Khoa, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Chau Thanh A district, added: Although the situation of pests on summer-autumn rice in the locality is being well controlled, it is forecasted that brown planthoppers, rats, rice blast disease, leaf rollers, etc. will continue to appear and cause damage to rice plants. Therefore, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the district recommends that people proactively implement effective measures to prevent pests on summer-autumn rice, especially regularly visiting the fields to promptly detect and treat when new pests appear, avoiding widespread spread...
