For many years, Nghe An people have known how to overcome the disadvantages of hot and dry weather to grow off-season vegetables, bringing high economic efficiency.

In Nghi Long commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, many families have a large source of income thanks to growing off-season vegetables.

The family of Ms. Cao Thi Hoi (residing in Nghi Long commune, Nghi Loc) has nearly 1,000 square meters of garden land. Previously, her family still followed nature, growing vegetables and tubers according to the season. Each season, they grew a different type of vegetable.

Growing vegetables in season is easy to grow and care for, and vegetables grow quickly. However, according to many long-standing vegetable growers in Nghi Long commune, growing vegetables and tubers in season is difficult to sell and has low prices.

The prices of main-season vegetables and fruits are low, even unsold, due to the large harvest, supply exceeding demand, market congestion, and continuous price declines.

Even for many years, there were too many vegetables and tubers, they could not be sold and had to be cut down to feed the livestock. The whole family's efforts were considered wasted.

Many farming households specializing in growing green vegetables, fruits and food in Nghe An also invest in technology to grow off-season vegetables for high income. Photo: TP

For about 3 years now, Mrs. Hoi's family has renovated the garden, divided the plots and invested in an automatic watering system.

Because she has the ability to control the water, she decided to grow vegetables off-season. Because she can control the weather, Mrs. Hoi's vegetable garden is always green and lush.

Currently, in Mrs. Hoi’s family garden, vegetables such as celery, coriander, and mustard greens are all lush and green, ready to be harvested. In addition, Mrs. Hoi also grows off-season vegetables such as kohlrabi and cabbage.

At this time, off-season vegetables are considered "rare goods" so they sell very well.

Every day, after the harvest, traders come to buy all the vegetables, at prices 3 to 4 times higher than the main crop. Thanks to that, Mrs. Hoi's family has a stable source of income.

Unlike Ms. Hoi's method, Mr. Ngo Sy Tuan (residing in Dien Xuan commune, Dien Chau district, Nghe An province) invested in a greenhouse with an area of nearly 1,000 m2 to grow off-season vegetables.

Mr. Tuan mainly grows coriander and lettuce in an organic rotation to sell to the market. Especially from April to September every year is the period when off-season vegetables sell at the best price and bring in the highest profit.

Mr. Tuan shared that if it is in season, a bunch of coriander costs only 500 to 700 VND, lettuce 10,000 VND/kg, but in the off-season, a bunch of coriander can cost 3,000 to 4,000 VND, lettuce up to 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg. Growing vegetables in the off-season requires more care and is more difficult, but the profit is higher.

Currently, people in the colored areas of Nghe An province have also found ways to overcome the harsh weather to grow off-season vegetables, bringing high economic efficiency.
