Early in the morning, when the relief team stopped at the mountainous commune of Con Cuong ( Nghe An ), among dozens of people rushing to receive each gift, a young girl, her clothes covered in mud, gently walked over. She only asked for a box of instant noodles and a few bottles of mineral water for her family, then quietly bowed her head to thank them, refusing any further attention. Not jostling, not talking much - her eyes at that time were both determined and melancholy.

That moment was accidentally recorded and quickly spread on social networks. The online community called it "an image that makes us silent and think". People recognized the girl in the video as Nguyen Hoai Thuong, 20 years old, a third-year student majoring in Literature and Communication, Da Nang University - a girl from the poor countryside of Ta Do village, Muong Tip commune, now returning home in the middle of the flood season.

Not long after, another clip recorded a scene where a volunteer told her to "Smile!", but she still did not smile. Someone commented: "How can you smile when your homeland is covered in mud, when so many people are still penniless because of the flood?". Another wrote: "Maybe you are trying not to cry."

Poor Student's Low Self-Esteem

The story of Nguyen Hoai Thuong makes many people admire her even more when they know that she lost her mother due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That loss was like a silent knife carved deep into the young girl's soul. Her father - a poor farmer - became the sole breadwinner supporting Thuong and her sister's education. Despite a difficult life, Thuong still overcame difficulties to enter Da Nang University - a dream of many students in the mountainous region.

Returning home for summer vacation, there was a flood. The house was flooded, mud seeped into the kitchen. But when she received the first relief gift, Thuong decided: not to accept any more.

"I am very grateful to the hearts from everywhere who have loved and cared for me. But I still feel healthy, I have my father and younger brother by my side. There are still many people out there who have lost everything. I would like to give my part to those who need it more" - Thuong shared.

Even when someone came and gave me 1 million VND, I did not accept it but transferred the money to the Commune Fatherland Front Committee to save for households that suffered more severe damage.

Ms. Tran Thi Hanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and President of the Women's Union of Con Cuong Commune, said: "Thuong's family was severely flooded, the mud in the house was up to her knees. But she did not beg or complain, she just quietly came to receive enough relief and then refused all the next gifts. Such self-respect and kindness are very valuable in this difficult time."
