(NLDO) - Ahead of the new season, Viettel The Cong Club successfully recruited Williams Lee. This is the first time the "soldier team" has used a Vietnamese-American player.

Williams Lee came from the English academy and is a close friend of many famous English football superstars. Before deciding to play in Vietnam, the 18-year-old midfielder consulted with striker Harry Kane and Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler.

Commenting on the new overseas Vietnamese player, the Fanpage of Viettel The Cong Club wrote: "Williams Lee is only 18 years old but plays steadily, making a strong impression with his ability to control the ball, tactical thinking and the potential to become an excellent midfielder in the future."

Williams Lee's father is British and his mother is of mixed Vietnamese and Chinese descent (his maternal grandmother is Chinese). In England, Lee was part of the Stockport County U18 team and played for Warrington in the National League North in the 2024-2025 season on loan. For this team, Williams Lee played 16 matches, including 12 starts, scoring 3 goals and having 1 assist.

Talking about Williams Lee, Coach Popov of The Cong Viettel expects: "I believe Williams has great potential to become a star in the V-League. At the age of 18, he has a lot of time to learn and develop."

Lee was once recommended to the Vietnam national team under coach Kim Sang-sik thanks to his impressive height of 1.88m, ability to play versatilely in the attack line and sharp "air combat" ability. However, the player born in 2007 does not yet have Vietnamese nationality, so it is difficult for him to have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming 33rd SEA Games.

Besides Williams Lee, coach Popov's team also added three Vietnamese-American players, including midfielder Damian Vu Thanh An, center back Kyle Colonna and striker Duong Thanh Tung.

Damian Vu Thanh An is a Vietnamese-Polish national, with a Vietnamese father and a Polish mother. The midfielder born in 2003 has an attacking style of play and has played professionally in Poland since he was 16 years old.

The 1.83m tall "rookie" affirmed: "I always wanted to play in Vietnam and from the first day I came to the headquarters of The Cong - Viettel, I wanted to stick with the club. I am very grateful to the team's leadership for giving me this opportunity."

Meanwhile, Kyle Colonna spent time with Hanoi FC in the V-League last season. The 26-year-old center-back is 1.88m tall, strong in aerial duels and very proactive in developing the ball from his own half.

Colonna, who has Vietnamese, American and Italian blood, is expected to be a quality addition alongside central defender Bui Tien Dung. Commenting on Kyle, Mr. Popov said: "I have high hopes for Kyle, especially with what he has shown during the pre-season. I hope Kyle and Bui Tien Dung will create a solid wall in front of the goal."

Duong Thanh Tung was born in 1999, lives in the Czech Republic and has parents who are both Vietnamese. The 1.85m tall striker grew up in the training center of Banik Most Club (Czech) and also had the opportunity to experience the V-League arena last season.

This season, Duong Thanh Tung is registered as a domestic player. With his strong positions as an attacking midfielder and striker, Thanh Tung is expected to help Viettel's attack increase its strength.
