The Country Full of Joy is one of the musical symbols of the Great Victory Day, but few people know that it was born in very special circumstances, written from the "spiritual aspiration" of the talented musician Hoang Ha, even before the scene of victory flags and flowers actually appeared.
In the last days of April 1975, the atmosphere in Hanoi was bustling, people all over the country, especially in the capital, followed the war situation in the South every hour, every minute. Musician Hoang Ha was the same.
Working at the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), he had access to news quickly and fully. Many days, he did not go home but stayed at the office, living with his colleagues in an atmosphere "burning with determination and belief in victory".
Musician Hoang Ha wrote the song "The Country is Full of Joy" on April 26, 1975.
The news of our army advancing like a storm towards Saigon was constantly flying in. The moment he heard the news of victory, signaling that the great day of joy for the nation was approaching, created a strong flow of emotions. Boundless emotion and happiness surged in the musician's soul.
On the night of April 26, 1975, at his private home in Hanoi, musician Hoang Ha wrote the song "The Country is Full of Joy". The song was his most sincere voice, expressing his complete happiness when the country was about to be completely liberated, the mountains and rivers were about to be reunited.
The melody is lively and bright, the lyrics are joyful and full of spirit, just like its name: "The victory festival excites the country/ I want to fly up and admire the majestic mountains and rivers/ I want to sing loudly forever the song of Vietnam/ The heroic Fatherland".
Talking about the song's "origin", musician Hoang Ha said: " It was not until April 26, 1975 that I learned that the campaign to attack Saigon was named the Ho Chi Minh Campaign. I was very moved, thinking that once the campaign was named after Uncle Ho, it could not fail to win, and that very night I wrote "The Country is Full of Joy" with the lines thinking about Uncle Ho: "We hear the echo of Uncle Ho's voice rising from the mountains and rivers. How exciting it is today that Uncle is happy with the whole people...".
On the morning of April 27, 1975, musician Hoang Ha brought the manuscript of the song "The Country is Full of Joy" to the Voice of Vietnam Radio Station. The song was immediately received. Musician Nguyen An, the Chief Music Editor at that time, read it, approved it, and immediately gave it to musician Trieu Dang to quickly mix and arrange it in time for broadcast. Artist Trung Kien (later People's Artist Trung Kien) was the first singer to perform this song.
One special thing about the songwriting process is that at the time of writing the song, musician Hoang Ha had not yet witnessed with his own eyes the scene of "forests of victory flags or the scene of thousands of yellow stars and red flags fluttering" on the streets of Saigon.
The joy in the song is the joy in his soul, his dream, his strong desire for the day of national reunification. He believes that not only he but also millions of Vietnamese people will feel this joy of victory completely when the news of the victory of the Ho Chi Minh campaign has rushed to all parts of the country.
According to musician Hoang Ha, the time he composed the song was only one day, but it was the crystallization of a whole process, a lifetime. When he wrote it, he was in Hanoi, and it wasn't until 1977 that he... saw Saigon for the first time.
The first recording of the song "The Country is Full of Joy" performed by People's Artist Trung Kien.
The first recording of "The Country Full of Joy" was quickly broadcast on the Voice of Vietnam radio, bringing a joyful atmosphere to all parts of the country. Later, the song was also broadcast on Liberation Radio for the first time on the morning of May 1, 1975, along with the song " As if Uncle Ho were here on the great victory day " by musician Pham Tuyen, spreading the joy of unification throughout the newly liberated South.
If " As if there were Uncle Ho on the great victory day " by musician Pham Tuyen is an excellent song in the genre of popular songs, then "The Country is Full of Joy" by musician Hoang Ha also meets that standard in the genre of art songs.
The song's melody is like "joy that has been pent up for a long time", now meeting a joyful historical moment that "resounds with every beat". The lyrics are like "dancing and singing", "spreading joy" to the listener and the singer, with "joy sparkling in every word". This is what helps the song easily enter people's hearts and live forever.
Musician Hoang Ha's real name is Hoang Phi Hong (1929-2013), originally from Yen Phu, Tay Ho, Hanoi. At the age of 16, he worked at the Viet Minh provincial office, Phuc Yen. Hoang Ha was closely involved in cultural work in Vinh Phuc province. In 1962, he studied at the Vietnam Music School (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music) and then worked at the Voice of Vietnam Radio Station - where he contributed and created many valuable musical works.
Before The Country Full of Joy, musician Hoang Ha was famous for many songs such as: Bright Lights on Viet Tri Bridge, Marching Together in the Spring, Meeting on the Truong Son Peak... However, The Country Full of Joy further affirmed his talent and captured the hearts of audiences and listeners nationwide, becoming one of the songs that accompanied the years and lived forever in the hearts of the public.
The song " The Country Full of Joy" is not only a musical work, but also a historical witness, a symbol of the sound of the day the country was reunited. The song's name was later chosen as the name of a music collection published in 1975 and republished in 1985 on the theme of the event of April 30, 1975, showing the great stature and historical significance of the work.
