According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa, in 2024, the whole province will have from 9,000 to 10,000 hectares that are likely to be affected by drought and salinity. In the immediate future, the agricultural sector is making efforts to convert over 1,500 hectares of high-risk areas to limit damage.

Currently, 24 communes with areas regularly affected by drought and saltwater intrusion have converted 35 to 40% of their water-scarce areas to grow drought-resistant crops that can use local irrigation systems such as squash, melons, fruit trees, and increased the use of salt-tolerant rice varieties; quickly implemented projects to remove acidity and salt and apply scientific and technological advances to production.

In the first 4 months of 2024, Thanh Hoa has converted over 700 hectares of drought-tolerant crops. In total, from 2015 to present, the whole province has converted more than 22 thousand hectares of drought-affected, low-yielding rice land to grow crops of high economic value.
