The idea of building a bridge across the Thu Bon River, connecting the eastern part of Quang Nam province with Hoi An and neighboring areas, has been cherished for a long time.
On February 6, 2009, the Government Office officially issued Notice No. 36/TB-VPCP, recording the conclusion of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in a working session with the leaders of Quang Nam province. One of the important contents is the Central Government's agreement to support 50% of the total investment capital for the Cua Dai Bridge Project, the remaining part will be exploited by the locality from land funds and other legal capital sources. This is a turning point decision, demonstrating the deep concern of the Party and State for the development of Quang Nam.
On July 17, 2009, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Minh Anh signed Decision 2337/QD-UBND approving the Cua Dai Bridge Construction Investment Project. The Coastal Population Arrangement Management Board of Quang Nam Province, later merged into the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone Management Board (now the Economic Zones and Industrial Zones Management Board of Quang Nam Province), was assigned as the project investor. The location of Cua Dai Bridge was determined to cross the Thu Bon River, located on the flood avoidance route of the overall coastal population arrangement project.
The main objective of the project is not only to prevent and minimize damage caused by natural disasters in coastal areas, but also to gradually improve the transport infrastructure system in the region and the national coastal road network. Cua Dai Bridge also plays an important role as a premise for implementing detailed planning of infrastructure in neighboring residential areas, expanding and developing urban space, and modernizing rural areas.
In terms of strategic location, Cua Dai Bridge is of particular importance in stabilizing politics, consolidating national security and defense, and promoting socio-economic development for the eastern region of Quang Nam province. The bridge has created a major traffic axis, connecting the eastern coastal areas of the province with Da Nang City, Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai), and creating links with the coastal areas of the Central region...
This has created a strong driving force to attract investment, especially large-scale tourism projects. At the same time, Cua Dai Bridge also helps to maximize the advantages and stimulate investment in 20,000 hectares of coastal land, connecting with Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and Hoi An Ancient Town World Cultural Heritage, promoting the socio-economic, cultural and tourism development of the province. The birth of Cua Dai Bridge demonstrates the great concern of the Party and State for a land rich in revolutionary traditions but not yet having the conditions to fully exploit its available potential.

Almost simultaneously with the implementation of the Cua Dai bridge project, rescue and relief road projects with a cross-section scale equivalent to the Cua Dai bridge approach road (38m wide) have been implemented, starting from km18+300 to km40+880 (intersection with National Highway 40B). These are the first steps to form the vital coastal route of Quang Nam.
To have a smooth Vo Chi Cong route, 69.4km long as it is today, Quang Nam province has continued to mobilize investment resources for other component projects. In particular, the investment project to build the main axis road from Tam Thang industrial park to Ky Ha port and Chu Lai airport aims to connect the coastal route in the province from Hoi An to Chu Lai airport, contributing to completing the province's road traffic network.
Notably, this project has completely connected the coastal corridor from Da Nang through Hoi An and Chu Lai Economic Zone to Chu Lai Airport and on to Dung Quat (Quang Ngai). This route plays a very important role in the orientation of tourism and service development of the province as well as industrial development of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, while meeting the increasing traffic demand of residents along both sides of the project as well as urban areas, contributing to the completion of traffic infrastructure in accordance with the planning, improving people's lives, creating urban landscapes and creating a premise to promote socio-economic development for Quang Nam.

Following that, the Vo Chi Cong coastal road expansion project from Cua Dai bridge to Tam Ky city was implemented, with a total length of 36.5km and a planned cross-section width of 38m. This project completed the opening of the new lane in September 2023, contributing to the completion of the coastal road from Cua Dai bridge to the QL40B intersection.
Finally, the project to complete coastal road 129 (Vo Chi Cong) with a total investment of nearly 2,056.76 billion VND has been approved and implemented, aiming to complete and upgrade the inter-regional traffic system connecting Cua Dai bridge to Chu Lai airport, forming a key coastal traffic route, connecting the regions of Da Nang, Quang Nam and Dung Quat Industrial Park (Quang Ngai province), at the same time connecting the coastal road to Dong Que Son Industrial Park and National Highway 14H, serving the development of industries, tourism, urban areas, services, creating conditions to promote socio-economic development in the province and ensuring national defense and security.

The completion of Cua Dai Bridge and Vo Chi Cong Street has created a turning point in attracting investment to the eastern region of Quang Nam. With a synchronous and modern transportation system, this area has become an attractive destination for many large domestic and foreign investors.
One of the typical projects is the Nam Hoi An Resort invested by VinaCapital Group and Gold Yield Enterprises Group, with a total area of 985 hectares and a total investment of up to 4 billion USD. The project started construction in April 2016 and has so far completed phase one with 4 international standard 5-star hotels, 1 golf course, 1 casino and commercial housing area, with a total investment of about 1.4 billion USD.
This project has created jobs for more than 2,500 local workers and about 3,000 indirect workers, and has become the largest FDI enterprise contributing tax to the state budget in Quang Nam. The Group has also prepared an additional 300 million USD to implement phase 2, including the largest conference center, exhibition area, sports, shopping, and entertainment area in the Central region.
In March 2024, BIN Corporation Group was granted an agreement in principle by the province to study the investment location of the Nam Thang Binh Industrial Park infrastructure investment and business project with a total capital of VND 6,850 billion. The project has a scale of 325 hectares, aiming to build a high-tech, ecological industrial park, promising to attract domestic and foreign secondary investors.
Recently, ROBINSON CLUB - a luxury resort brand of TUI Group, has officially launched ROBINSON Nam Hoi An resort at Tam Tien beach (Nui Thanh). With 318 comfortable rooms, sophisticated design, and a series of high-class utilities and services, this resort has affirmed the attractiveness of the eastern region of Quang Nam for the high-end tourism segment.
The positive impact of Cua Dai Bridge and Vo Chi Cong Street is not only reflected in impressive investment figures but also in the obvious changes in the lives of local people.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung - 82 years old, in An Luong village, Duy Hai commune (Duy Xuyen), shared that for nearly 10 years, since the completion of Cua Dai bridge, people no longer have to "depend on the ferry" every time they want to go to the city. The local economy has also developed more thanks to the convenient seafood trade, and children in the area have more job opportunities from tourist areas.
In particular, the coastal route has opened up a large land fund of about 20,000 hectares, creating conditions for the development of high-end urban, tourism and service projects.
Mr. Vo Van Hung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thang Binh district, said that land resources in the eastern part of the district have been exploited and are ready to be handed over to investors.
[VIDEO] - Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung assessed the potential of land funds along Vo Chi Cong Street:
Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Dung stated that the development space of the eastern region of Quang Nam is still very large. The strip of land along the coast from Cua Dai Bridge (Hoi An) to Cua Lo (Nui Thanh) is a huge advantage to attract investors. The Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee has directed the pilot implementation of site clearance for the Tam Anh Nam Industrial Park Project (450ha) and Nam Thang Binh Industrial Park (650ha) to create a clean land fund, ready to welcome large investors.
In Tam Ky City, new urban areas such as Song Dam, urban areas along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street extending to the sea, along with high-tech medical complexes, medical complexes combined with resort tourism will be formed. In Duy Xuyen, there are businesses researching and investing in a marina project.
According to Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung (now Deputy Prime Minister), on the coastal road from Cua Dai Bridge to Chu Lai Airport, there are two development locomotives: Hoiana Resort & Golf Project in the north and THACO projects in the south. The clean land fund along both sides of the coastal road, formed over the past 20 years, is considered "gold", a "reserve" for the future of Quang Nam, especially for large high-tech projects and coastal urban complexes.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also emphasized that coastal land is a prominent strength of Quang Nam and needs to be effectively exploited, turning the coastal road into a new development corridor, focusing on developing production, business, services, and tourism in the east and industry and urban areas in the west.

Cua Dai Bridge and Vo Chi Cong Street are not only simple traffic works but also symbols of the development aspirations, dynamism and strategic vision of the leaders and people of Quang Nam province.
From "ferrying" to "taking off", Quang Nam has written a miraculous development story thanks to two century-old projects, creating a new face for this land of great potential, while opening up bright development opportunities in the future. With increasingly complete transport infrastructure, Quang Nam is confidently "taking off" from its prime coastal land fund, aiming to become one of the developed provinces in the Central region and the whole country.
