Quang Ngai Provincial Museum is over 30,000 m2 wide, has been in operation since 2007, with the task of collecting, inventorying, preserving, and displaying to promote the effects of historical-cultural and natural heritages suitable to the type, nature and content of the museum.

However, after a long period of operation without investment or upgrading, many items of the museum have seriously degraded and been damaged.

Guide visitors... to avoid leaks

According to the reporter's observation, outside the museum, the brick walls are peeling, items such as steps and surrounding walls are also cracked and jagged. The corrugated iron roof is rusted and rotten in many places.

“The museum's corrugated iron roof has been damaged for many years and has not been repaired, so every time it rains, water leaks from the roof and flows onto the floor.

We have to use rainwater collection devices, use wet towels to dry the floor to protect the artifacts; at the same time, we put up warning signs so that visitors should not enter the leaking area" - Mr. Nguyen Kim Son, Head of the General Administration Department - Quang Ngai Provincial General Museum said.

Inside the museum, the walls are peeling and water-permeable, causing mold, seriously affecting the protection and preservation of artifacts.

In particular, the area displaying artifacts, images, and documents on the second floor of the museum had to temporarily close to visitors due to severe damage to items.

According to the museum's leadership, the reason for the deterioration is partly due to the lack of maintenance and repair over many years of use; in addition, the complex weather and frequent storms have caused severe damage to the museum.

Quang Ngai Provincial Museum is a place to preserve and display over 20,000 artifacts, over 6,500 valuable documents and images; each year it welcomes about 70,000 visitors.

However, the serious degradation of this building is a major obstacle for the museum to fulfill its role as a space to display, preserve and promote the value of historical-cultural and natural heritages.

Ms. Nguyen Cam Phu, Cam Thanh ward said: "I hope the Provincial General Museum will soon be repaired, upgraded, invested more in infrastructure, and applied more digital transformation.

Only then can we attract the younger generation, creating conditions for people to learn about history in more diverse and attractive ways."

Looking forward to new construction projects

The 13th Quang Ngai Provincial People's Council has issued a Resolution on the proposed Medium-term Public Investment Plan for the 2026-2030 period; in which, the province will invest in building a new Provincial Museum and General Library, aiming to develop the province's cultural sector to be more modern and spacious, combining the Provincial Convention and Exhibition Center into a center of activities and organizing cultural events of the province.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, Phan Van Hoang, said that investing in and upgrading the Provincial Museum is necessary to develop an exhibition space commensurate with the enormous historical and cultural values that Quang Ngai holds, especially the Sa Huynh Culture, helping to better preserve heritage, enhance visitor experience and gradually turn Quang Ngai into a cultural tourism center of the region.

“The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism hopes that in the coming time, the Provincial Museum and Provincial Library projects will soon be implemented.

Only then can we do a good job of preserving, displaying and introducing the cultural heritage values and cultural history of the locality, contributing to the socio-economic development of the province," Mr. Hoang emphasized./.
