On the morning of April 6, in Can Tho City, within the framework of the 2025 Southern Traditional Cake Festival, a performance and cutting of a giant banh chung took place.
The giant banh chung cake, after being offered to the Hung Kings, was brought to the 2025 Southern Traditional Cake Festival to be cut and shared for everyone to enjoy.
The cake measures 1.9m x 1.9m, 0.8m thick, and weighs 1.6 tons. To make this banh chung, over the past few days, the organizers had to prepare 600kg of sticky rice, 235kg of mung beans, more than 215kg of pork belly, more than 1,000 banana leaves, 1,800 dong leaves, and dwarf bamboo strings (sent from the North).
According to the chefs, in order to combine regional cuisine, the giant banh chung was made by 30 families according to Southern tastes but still retained the form and external characteristics of a northern banh chung.
"The banh chung is added with coconut milk and sugar to suit the taste of Southerners, instead of just seasoned with salt like a typical banh chung in the North," said Mr. Tran Minh Cuong, Permanent Vice President of the Association of Professional Chefs of Can Tho City and chef of Song Hau Farm Eco-Zone.
The pieces of cake are cut from a giant banh chung.
According to Mr. Cuong, before promoting and displaying at the 2025 Southern Traditional Cake Festival, most of the stages were done at Song Hau Farm with a total cost of about 150 million VND.
According to Mr. Cuong, to prepare for making this giant banh chung, he and related units tried to cook a cake with more than 300kg of ingredients using new technology. The result exceeded expectations with a soft, delicious, and chewy cake crust, cooked evenly from the inside out.
After being displayed and promoted, the giant banh chung was cut and divided among about 2,000 visitors to enjoy.
