“The Tunnel: Sun in the Dark” became the highest-grossing film of his directing career. Bui Thac Chuyen. He is a famous and talented director, but his films are always considered to be of a picky audience.
Bui Thac Chuyen's "Glorious Ashes" once received a storm of praise from critics, causing Tran Thanh to post an article expressing admiration on his personal page, but its revenue was modest, only over 4 billion VND.
“Tunnel: Sun in the Dark” is also the most expensive project that Bui Thac Chuyen has ever directed, the film cost 55 billion VND to produce. With this cost, the film needs to earn about 120 billion VND to break even. If it exceeds 120 billion VND, the film will start to make a profit.
Going beyond the revenue story, “Tunnel: Sun in the Dark” has now become a rare Vietnamese war-themed film that has taken social media by storm. Previously, most films were losing money, even criticized for being dry and handling old topics, such as: “Living with History”, “Dien Bien Memories”...
On his personal page, the screenwriter of the film “Doi Cat” (a film with a post-war theme) predicted that “Tunnel: Sun in the Dark” could be nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The reason given was that the film achieved international technical standards, good music, a well-written script, and this topic has always been popular with American filmmakers.
Before becoming a director, Bui Thac Chuyen started out as an actor. He studied Drama at the Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema. After graduating, he joined the Vietnam Drama Theater. Bui Thac Chuyen participated in many plays and films as an actor. He once played a soldier in a war film called "The Burning Fire of Love".
When he was an actor, Bui Thac Chuyen also made the audience swoon with his tall, handsome appearance.
Coming from an actor background, Bui Thac Chuyen is very meticulous and perfectionist in choosing actors and has high requirements for acting. Many actors have commented, "working with Bui Thac Chuyen is very tiring".
However, Thai Hoa said, he needs the meticulousness, carefulness, and perfectionism of a director like Bui Thac Chuyen. That way of working will bring high efficiency to the work.
Before the film's release date, Bui Thac Chuyen had about 4-5 edits, and he continued to edit and polish until the film's release date.
In a conversation with Lao Dong reporter, Ho Thu Anh (playing Ba Huong) said that she had to lose 7-8 kg to film “Tunnel: Sun in the Dark”. After filming, she breathed a sigh of relief and tried to eat and rest to gain weight again (because she was too skinny). However, after gaining 7 kg, she received a call from the director to film some additional scenes. So she had to quickly lose weight again.
When asked about the hot scene with Quang Tuan (as Tu Dap), Ho Thu Anh revealed that she was very proactive in this scene to help Quang Tuan feel less shy.
"I'm not afraid that Tuan's wife will be jealous, because in real life, I'm not only close to Quang Tuan, but also close to his wife" - Ho Thu Anh said.
Thai Hoa shared that after finishing filming, he loved the tunnel so much that he wished he could bring a part of it home and bury it under his house.
