GPT-5 was expected to be a leap forward in bringing AI closer to AGI, but it disappointed many people. Users point out that this model still has basic flaws, not even outperforming its competitors.
Experts like Thomas Wolf, co-founder and chief scientist of open-source AI startup Hugging Face, and Gary Marcus, a prominent AI critic and professor emeritus at New York University, say GPT-5 is only an incremental improvement, not a revolution. This has raised concerns that high expectations for AI are creating a tech bubble.
Hundreds of billions of dollars have been poured into AI infrastructure and startups, making the risk of collapse “very, very quickly”. Stuart Russell, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, even compared the current situation to the AI winter of the 1980s, when the technology failed to meet expectations and failed to deliver profits. However, many investors still believe that AI is only in its early stages and the application opportunities are still huge.
