Inside Vietnam's largest university city

The main gate of the Hanoi National University urban area is located on Thang Long Avenue, about 30 km from the center of Hanoi. Hoa Lac campus is built according to the "5 in 1" model: talent training center; technology transfer research center; innovation center; smart university urban area; public-private partnership testing center and research training.

Mr. Le Quan, Director of Hanoi National University, said that 6,000 students studying at Hoa Lac this year come from 8 schools and faculties: University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Technology, Vietnam-Japan University, Law University, Education University, International School, Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences and all 10th grade students of the High School of Educational Sciences.

Students read books at a point of the Library and Digital Knowledge Center (VNU-LIC). In the far corner, staff are digitizing documents to serve the reading needs of lecturers and students through websites and applications developed by the center. This center uses the most modern digitizing equipment in the world such as Treventus and Zeutschel with fast scanning and document processing speed.

VNU-LIC plans to have 4 locations in Hoa Lac, currently deploying 3 locations. Over the past 10 years, this unit has digitized over 170,000 textbooks, digital reference books; 93,500 internal documents (theses, dissertations, research results...); 53,000 Springer, ScienceDirect e-books...

Mr. Phung Hoai Nam, lecturer of Theory and Individual Sports (orange shirt), said that this subject has been taught at Hanoi National University since 2021, but the facilities in the inner city are not adequate. Since the second semester of last year, when teaching started in Hoa Lac with a spacious yard and open space, many students registered to study, up to several hundred students.

According to Director Le Quan, Hanoi National University implements a comprehensive education model for first-year students at Hoa Lac, including three comprehensive aspects: Physically strong - Mentally strong - Good at social skills. Diversifying the content of Physical Education or experiential activities is part of the school's comprehensive education plan.

Students of the University of Technology study and live in the dormitory of Hanoi National University. This year, all of the more than 700 first-year students of this school are in the dormitory, arranged separately for men and women, with 8 students per room.

Bui Nguyen Gia Bao (second from right), from Thanh Hoa, said he was initially disappointed because he thought he would study in the inner city with many better experiences. "However, when I came to Hoa Lac, I had very interesting experiences, such as walking at least 1-2 km around the campus every day," Bao said.

Hanoi National University currently has 9 member universities, 2 schools and 2 affiliated faculties, 6 research institutes and training centers, scientific research centers, service units and knowledge transfer. The total size of the university is about 40,000 students. It is expected that by 2025, the facilities in Hoa Lac will complete phase 1, operating with a scale of 15,000 students.
