Bee stings do not cause skin necrosis but can cause anaphylactic shock - Photo: Provided by doctor
On May 4, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien - Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) - said that he had just saved the life of a 3-year-old boy named LNPK (living in District 8, HCMC) who was stung by a bee, causing anaphylactic shock.
Medical history revealed that 2 hours before being admitted to the hospital, K. was playing in the house when many bees flew in. He was stung by a bee on his right thigh and stepped on another one.
Family members believe that the type of bee that stung baby K. was a wasp because they saw a nest in front of the house. After being stung by the bee, baby K. vomited, had red skin, swollen eyes, and pale lips.
The family then took the child to a local medical facility, and then transferred him to the City Children's Hospital.
At the time of admission, the patient was lethargic, unconscious, cyanotic, had a respiratory rate of 42 times/minute, weak pulse, cool extremities, blood pressure of 80/60mmHg, and had bee stings on the thigh and between the two toes on the right foot.
Doctors diagnosed baby K. with grade 3 anaphylaxis and respiratory failure due to the bee sting in the second hour. The baby was given oxygen and treated according to the correct protocol.
The patient's condition gradually improved, respiratory failure ended, blood pressure was stable, alert, facial swelling and skin redness disappeared.
Children are continued to be monitored in the hospital for at least 24 hours to detect early signs of late shock and complications of damage to the liver, kidneys, brain, heart, and lungs.
Through this case, Dr. Minh Tien reminded parents to pay attention to their children during the holiday season. Avoid letting children climb or pick fruit because they may have accidents due to falling or being attacked by bees due to accidentally or intentionally disturbing the beehive. Parents should clear and control beehives around the house and in the garden.
When children go on picnics in the woods or gardens, they should avoid wearing colorful clothes or applying too much perfume because it can easily attract bees to attack.
