This afternoon (October 4), Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Nguyen Van Huong said that storm Koinu entered the East Sea but is unlikely to affect the mainland of our country. This will be the 4th storm in the East Sea in 2023.

Specifically, at 7:00 p.m. tonight, the center of the storm is located at approximately 22.1 degrees North latitude; 122.0 degrees East longitude, in the sea southeast of Taiwan (China). The strongest wind near the center of the storm is level 14 (150-166 km/h), gusting to level 17, moving west at a speed of approximately 15 km/h.

In the next 24 hours, the storm is forecast to move west-northwest at a speed of about 10 km/hour. At 7:00 p.m. on October 5, the center of the storm was about 280 km east-southeast of Guangdong (China) with winds of level 12, gusting to level 15.

At 7:00 p.m. on October 6, the storm center was at 22.6N-117.5E, in the sea southeast of Guangdong province (China), starting to enter the East Sea at a speed of about 10km/h, heading West Northwest and gradually weakening, with an intensity of level 10, gusting to level 12.

In the next 24 hours, the storm's center will be located in the sea southeast of Guangdong province (China), moving west at a speed of 5-10km/h and weakening further; the strongest wind will be level 8-9, gusting to level 11.

From the next 72 to 120 hours, the storm will move mainly in the West Southwest direction, about 5km per hour, and its intensity will continue to weaken.

Due to the influence of storm Koinu, the weather in the northeastern sea of ​​the North East Sea has strong winds of level 7-10, from the afternoon of October 5, the area near the storm's eye will have winds of level 11-12, gusting to level 15; the sea is rough; the waves are 2-4m high; from tonight, they will be 4-6m high, from tomorrow afternoon (October 5), the area near the storm's eye will have waves of 6-8m high.

On land, this evening and tonight, the area from Quang Nam to Phu Yen, the Central Highlands and the South will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally with moderate to heavy rain with rainfall of 10-30mm, some places over 50mm (rain concentrated in the late afternoon and evening). During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

Localized heavy rains are likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas, and the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

Previously, the meteorological agency assessed that in October, storms and tropical depressions are likely to appear in the East Sea about 1-2 times and may affect the mainland of our country.

Further, the agency said that from now until the end of 2023, there will likely be about 2-4 storms/tropical depressions in the East Sea, of which about 1-2 will directly affect our mainland. Be on guard against storms with complex developments in both trajectory and intensity.
