According to the latest report from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is hatching big plans for the smart home market, going beyond a regular HomePod with a screen.
This ambition includes advanced robotics and a deeply integrated security ecosystem.
The centerpiece of the plan is an ambitious “desktop robot” slated for release in 2027. Described as an iPad mini mounted on a flexible robotic arm, the device can automatically rotate to follow the user across the room, turn toward the person talking, and use its built-in camera for FaceTime calls. This is Apple’s vision of a truly interactive home assistant.
Before this robot arrives, a simpler version, essentially a HomePod with a touchscreen but no mobility, is said to be coming in 2026. This could be a stepping stone to introduce users to Apple's new smart home control center.
To complete the ecosystem, Apple is also developing home security products such as cameras and smart doorbells. These devices will integrate facial recognition technology, allowing for automating tasks such as unlocking doors, turning off lights, or playing favorite music as soon as users enter the house.
The brain behind the whole system is a completely new version of Siri, “overhauled” with large language models (LLMs) similar to ChatGPT. This “more personal Siri,” after a delay, is expected to launch soon, promising to bring intelligent and seamless interactions to the entire ecosystem.
The effort is reminiscent of Amazon's experiments with the Astro robot or the Echo Show display, but Apple seems to be taking more patience to create a truly complete and refined experience.
