Launched in 2021, the competition aims to attract and connect young talent from around the world to build the future of e-commerce. The 2024 edition of the competition focuses on exploring ways to enhance the online shopping experience through artificial intelligence (AI), for university students and recent graduates.

This year’s competition attracted a huge turnout of over 1,000 individuals from over 500 teams, representing regions including Europe, the Americas, East Asia and Southeast Asia. After two rounds of rigorous selection, 11 teams with a total of 39 contestants advanced to the global finals in Hangzhou to compete for the top three spots.

Among the participating teams, it is impossible not to mention the energetic presence of Vietnamese students, with team TORUDOVI from Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City campus and International University, introducing the AI-Gift solution. The project aims to create a personalized online gifting experience using artificial intelligence (AI), providing features such as LazPresent and LazFriends to enhance the interaction between givers and recipients and reaching the final round.

Team CrashCourse, comprising students from Singapore Management University, won first place for their innovative approach and outstanding teamwork, taking home a $10,000 travel voucher.

The Echelon Group, comprising students from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, College Park; and Team Saturdays, comprising students from Bandung Institute of Technology, took second and third place, respectively, with travel vouchers worth $5,000 and $3,000.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to help nurture the next generation of global e-commerce talent through a global competition,” said Lillian Jiang, Chief People Officer of Alibaba International. “The determination and teamwork shown by the contestants is truly inspiring, and we are excited to welcome some of these outstanding young talents as interns. We look forward to seeing their ideas make a real impact in the e-commerce industry.”
