Egypt is expected to officially inaugurate the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in early November 2025 as part of efforts to attract more international tourists to the North African country, after the inauguration was postponed last month due to regional geopolitical tensions.
According to a VNA correspondent in Cairo, during a cabinet meeting on August 6, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly directed all relevant ministries and agencies to complete all preparations to ensure the inauguration of GEM takes place on November 1, as directed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
The GEM inauguration ceremony was scheduled for July 3, but the Egyptian government decided to postpone the event on June 21, amid escalating regional tensions at the time, especially the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
Mr. Madbouly stressed that the inauguration of GEM will be a special international event, along with a series of important national events linked to modern Egyptian history.
Construction began in 2002 on an area of nearly 500,000 square meters, with a total cost of more than 1 billion USD, GEM is one of Egypt's most massive cultural projects in the 21st century.
Located near the famous Giza Pyramids on the Giza Plateau, the GEM is not only the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization - ancient Egypt - but also a symbol of Egypt's efforts to modernize tourism and preserve its heritage.
Located in Giza province, about 20km west of central Cairo, GEM creates a striking visual link between ancient heritage and modern architecture.
The museum's exhibition area covers an area of approximately 24,000 square meters. GEM consists of 12 main galleries that tell the story of ancient Egyptian society with three main themes: Kingship, Society and Religion.
The artifacts at the museum are arranged according to the most modern display methods, bringing a deeply interactive experience to visitors.
To date, more than 57,000 artifacts have been transferred to the museum, of which 14,000 are on display in the main exhibition rooms.
The GEM will house King Tutankhamun's entire collection, which includes 5,390 artifacts.
King Tutankhamun was one of the most famous kings of ancient Egypt. He reigned from the age of 9 until his death around the age of 19. His reign, though short, was one of the most prosperous periods in ancient Egypt.
GEM is not only a place to preserve Egyptian heritage and civilization, but also serves as a center for science, culture and education. With modern technological facilities, the museum will bring a unique integrated experience to visitors.
Once officially opened, the GEM will become one of the most important cultural destinations in the world. It will display more than 100,000 artifacts from ancient Egyptian civilization, including the complete Tutankhamun collection.
Not only is it the world's largest archaeological museum, it is also a highlight of Egypt's tourism industry.
One of the highlights of GEM is its advanced display technology, which combines 3D imaging, virtual reality and modern lighting. These multi-sensory experiences allow visitors to "travel back in time," gaining a deeper understanding of the history, beliefs, lives and worldview of the ancient Egyptians.
The construction of GEM is part of the Egyptian government’s strategy to boost tourism, an important pillar of the country’s economy. GEM is not simply a tourist destination, but a symbol of the aspiration to connect the glorious past with a sustainable future.
Not only preserving the rich cultural treasure of one of the greatest civilizations in human history, GEM promises to become an unmissable destination for all tourists who want to explore the historical depth and eternal beauty of Egypt./.
