Currently, Xuan Long commune, Yen Binh district ( Yen Bai province) has over 40 hectares of medicinal plants; of which, nearly 10 hectares are planted with yellow camellia concentrated in village 7. Each year, medicinal plants, including yellow camellia, bring in over 2 billion VND in revenue.

As a pioneer household in Xuan Long commune, Yen Binh district (Yen Bai province) growing yellow camellia and velvet antler, two precious medicinal plants that bring high economic efficiency, Mr. Vu Quyet Thang in village 7 shared: "Previously, more than 2 hectares of hilly land of his family only planted large timber trees such as fat and acacia and the economic efficiency was not high.

In 2018, after going to many places to learn about households getting rich from the forest, especially households in Tam Dao district, Vinh Phuc province growing yellow tea flowers and velvet anise under the forest canopy to bring economic efficiency, I researched the consumption market and went to the forest to find velvet anise and yellow tea flowers to plant experimentally.

After several months of planting, seeing the trees grow well, I continued to propagate and expand the planting area to cover the entire land area under the forest canopy of my family.

The technique of planting and caring for yellow camellia and velvet anemone is not difficult and both of these plants do not like light and are suitable for planting under the forest canopy.

From planting until the tree is 0.8 m to 1 m high, fertilize once a month and can use NPK fertilizer or manure, organic fertilizer as base fertilizer; the tree's growth rate is good, has few fungal diseases, high resistance and produces many flowers.

Yellow camellia and velvet antler trees are both precious medicinal plants with expensive flowers and leaves.

If well cared for, the velvet tree can be harvested after 1 year, and the yellow camellia tree will start flowering after 3 years of planting.

On average, each crop, a tea tree produces about 1 kg of flowers and fresh buds, and the older the tree, the more flowers it has. With 2 hectares of yellow tea flowers and velvet flowers, each year Mr. Thang's family harvests 10 kg of dried tea flowers and earns about 100 million VND; tea leaves earn from 50 to 100 million VND; velvet flowers bring in over 150 million VND/ha. In addition, Mr. Thang also cultivates and sells yellow tea flowers and velvet flowers seedlings, earning from 150 to 200 million VND.

From the effectiveness of the velvet antler and yellow camellia plants of Mr. Vu Quyet Thang's family, many households in Xuan Long have learned the experience of growing these two medicinal plants on their family's forest area.

In 2019, Binh An Medicinal Materials Cooperative was established with 7 members, led by Mr. Vu Quyet Thang. The members have joined together in production, increasing economic value under the forest canopy and currently, the Cooperative has grown to 30 members.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa - a member of Binh An Medicinal Herbs Cooperative said: "Joining the Cooperative, my family has planted velvet anise under the canopy of tallow and acacia forests since 2020 with an area of 1.5 hectares. In 2021, velvet anise trees were harvested at a selling price of 170 - 220,000 VND/kg of dry leaves, earning over 100 million VND. This year, my family will intercrop yellow tea flowers in the forest area to increase income."

According to calculations by households participating in growing yellow camellia and velvet antler, the benefits obtained are 5 times higher than growing only one type of large tree. At the same time, developing livelihoods from yellow camellia and velvet antler trees has contributed to creating biodiversity, enhancing resilience and adapting to climate change.

Currently, Xuan Long commune has over 40 hectares of medicinal plants; of which, nearly 10 hectares of yellow camellia are concentrated in village 7. Each year, income from medicinal plants reaches over 2 billion VND.

To help households become rich, achieve and exceed income criteria in new rural construction, preserve and develop precious medicinal herbs, in recent years, Xuan Long commune has increased training courses and transferred scientific and technical advances to farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Long Commune, Yen Binh District (Yen Bai Province) said: People in Xuan Long Commune mainly live on agricultural and forestry development; in which, the forest land area is 2,000 hectares.

From the economic efficiency of the yellow camellia and velvet antler trees, the locality will promote planning, development, and expansion of medicinal plant growing areas; establish production and consumption linkage facilities, and develop typical medicinal products of the commune to meet market demand.
