Community response

Accordingly, during the flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of last week, Le Quy Don Primary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) organized a ceremony to award certificates of merit to students participating in the campaign to support the people in the North affected by storm No. 3.

According to information from the school, students are divided into two groups to receive awards. Those who contribute 100,000 VND or more will receive a certificate of merit signed by the principal, while those who contribute less than 100,000 VND will only receive a letter of merit signed by the homeroom teacher.

This action by Le Quy Don Primary School immediately caused negative reactions from parents and the community. Many people believe that discriminating based on the amount of money students contribute is inappropriate, especially in an educational environment.

Many parents believe that this form of reward is anti-educational, can cause psychological damage to students and create unnecessary discrimination among students.

Faced with a wave of public opposition, a representative of Le Quy Don Primary School explained: "The main reason is that there are too many certificates of merit, while the principal is on a business trip so he cannot sign them all."

Negative impact on educational environment

Educational psychologist Nong Thi Nguyet said that Le Quy Don Primary School's actions were inappropriate because the school is an educational institution, a place to train the future generation of young people, talents and national spirit. Using the large and small values of money to discriminate between rich and poor students has hurt children in difficult circumstances and is uneducational. At primary school age, children are very sensitive to comparisons and evaluations from adults. Receiving different forms of rewards can create unpredictable psychological trauma.

Discrimination in rewards can have many negative psychological impacts on students, such as creating a sense of inferiority for those who contribute less, putting unnecessary financial pressure on students' families, and reducing their motivation to participate in social activities in the future.

Along with that, this way of rewarding can also create false notions of value in society such as: equating human value with financial ability, creating the idea that money can buy recognition and honor, blurring the true meaning of charity and helping the community.

This goes against the values that education is trying to build, such as compassion, mutual love, and the value of each individual regardless of economic conditions.

Through this incident, we clearly see the importance of building a fair educational environment where every student is evaluated based on their real efforts and achievements.
