Ms. Mai Thi Tuyet Mai (34 years old), Lam's mother, said: "Lam's leukemia has taken away so much money and property from the family. Now, her illness is in a serious stage but we have run out of money for treatment."

Loving her child, but her family being poor, Ms. Mai had to borrow money to treat Lam. The family had no land to produce crops, so Ms. Mai and her husband worked as factory workers and rented a house, but now she had to quit her job to take care of her child. Recently, due to not having enough money to pay for food, accommodation, tests, chemotherapy for Lam, Ms. Mai took Lam to Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City) many times and then brought her back, causing her condition to become more serious.

Every day, Ms. Mai takes care of Lam - her 3-year-old daughter who has leukemia.
Every day, Ms. Mai takes care of Lam - her 3-year-old daughter who has leukemia.

After returning home, the pain continued to torment her, so her family had to take Lam to the hospital again, this time for her fifth round of chemotherapy. Even though she had health insurance, the antibiotics to fight infections that were not listed on the list cost tens of millions of dong, so Mai's family did not know how to handle it.

Ms. Mai said that both her paternal and maternal families were poor. After getting married, she and her husband rented a house to live in and worked as factory workers. Therefore, for more than a year, Ms. Mai's family's life fell into a deadlock when Lam was diagnosed with leukemia and heart valve disease and had no money for treatment.

The doctor said that even if the bone marrow transplant is successful and there is no infection, Lam's chances of survival are very slim. "I am very afraid that one day I will have to let go of my child, because after more than a year of treatment, we have run out of money, and the whole family does not know how to save our child. We just hope to have enough money to buy antibiotics to keep our child alive," Mai choked.

Since her daughter got sick, Ms. Mai had to quit her job to take care of her. Since then, the family's finances have depended entirely on her husband's income as a factory worker.

Not only that, her husband also has to take care of their 8-year-old son, who is in 2nd grade. To save money, during the time taking care of her son in the hospital, almost all of Mai's meals were from charity meals. However, currently, Mai and her husband still owe tens of millions of dong.

The journey to save her child's life was difficult, but with a mother's boundless love for her child, Mai never once thought of giving up hope. Every time she witnessed her child writhing in pain on the hospital bed, Mai felt like her heart was being torn apart.

“I feel so heartbroken and helpless. I wish I could take the pain for my child, because he is too young to endure the excruciating pain,” Mai said sadly. After a year of treatment, the hospital seemed to have become a second home for Mai and Lam.

“After 5 rounds of chemotherapy, my child’s health had not yet recovered when the doctor informed me that the disease had returned, and the cancer cells had invaded the cerebrospinal fluid of the central nervous system. Once again, my family fell into despair, because now we could no longer afford to treat my child, but we could not abandon him,” Ms. Mai said sadly.

Mr. Le Tan Long, Head of Hoa Binh Hamlet, Vinh Huu Commune, confirmed: Ms. Mai and her husband are local residents and are in very difficult circumstances. They have to rent a house to live in and work as factory workers. Ms. Mai and her husband have a 3-year-old daughter with leukemia, who is often hospitalized for chemotherapy and uses very expensive medicine, and an 8-year-old son who is in school. Therefore, Ms. Mai's family is looking forward to receiving help from the community and society.
