From the night of November 1 to the early morning of November 2, many Catholic families gathered together to light candles and offer flowers to the graves of their ancestors and deceased relatives. They turned towards the Cross and the statue of Jesus and prayed for the souls of the deceased at the Xom Dao Tha La cemetery (Trang Bang commune, Tay Ninh).
The Mass for the Deceased Faithful (Religious People) is also known as "All Souls' Day" or simply "All Souls' Day" and takes place after the Feast of All Saints. This is one of the most important holidays for Catholics in Tha La.
On All Souls Day, the graves of the deceased in the Holy Land of Tha La are decorated and cleaned by relatives.
When the sky just turned dark, the Holy Land of Tha La was lit up with thousands of shimmering candles, brightening up the sky, dispelling the usual cold loneliness of the cemetery, replacing it with a sacred, warm atmosphere.
In 1867, the first graves were buried in the Holy Land. Over the years, the Holy Land of Tha La has undergone many renovations and expansions, and now there are more than 1,000 graves of Catholics buried here.
"Every year in November, I go to the Holy Land of Tha La to pray for my relatives. Visiting the cemetery and praying is not only a loving gesture towards the deceased, but also brings us many blessings," said Mr. Phuc (67 years old, Trang Bang).
Each grave is also lit with white candles, with the image of a cross or Bible verses on them. The flickering candles on the graves in the Holy Land represent filial piety, gratitude and the tradition of "remembering the source of water" of the Catholics of Tha La parish.
Under countless flickering candles, some people play musical instruments beside the graves of their loved ones, making the atmosphere in the Holy Land more intimate and cozy.
Many children came to the Holy Land with their families early, chatting and playing together next to the graves of their ancestors.
Many families also bring many kinds of colorful flowers to decorate the graves of their loved ones.
In the most magical and sparkling moment, family members gather together to read scriptures and pray for the soul of the deceased.
The beauty of the cemetery on All Souls' Day not only shows gratitude for the deceased, but also expresses the affection between people, between the living.
Ms. Thanh (69 years old) silently looked at the portrait of her loved one after lighting candles and praying.
"The atmosphere in the Holy Land on this holiday is very sacred and cozy. At this moment sitting by the candle, I feel closest to my loved ones," said Ms. Thanh.
Tha La Catholic Hamlet (Trang Bang Commune, Tay Ninh) currently has more than 5,000 Catholics living there. This is the oldest religious site in Tay Ninh, a testament to the history of the first Catholics in this locality.
Tha La Catholic Hamlet was once mentioned in the famous poem "Tha La Catholic Hamlet" by poet Vu Anh Khanh, which was later set to music by musician Dzung Chinh.
