TKV: Timely deployment of support packages for workers affected by storm No. 3

Storm No. 3 made landfall in Quang Ninh on September 7, causing heavy damage to units of the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV), disrupting production and directly affecting many families of coal workers. To support union members and workers in overcoming difficulties caused by storm No. 3, the TKV Trade Union and coal units are implementing many practical support activities, helping workers to soon stabilize their lives and jobs...

Early last October, Cam Pha Port and Logistics Company organized a fund-raising event for workers affected by storm No. 3.

Nam Mau Coal Company is one of the units that suffered heavy damage caused by storm No. 3 with total damage estimated at over 60 billion VND. In particular, some materials and equipment such as: scraper motors, conveyor motors, fans, water pumps, drills, hydraulic components, and support brackets were damaged due to being placed in areas where production was temporarily suspended and low-lying areas were partially flooded. In addition, many traffic works, construction works, environmental landscapes, and trees were completely collapsed, destroyed, and buried.

In addition, the entire company had 201 workers whose houses were damaged by roofs being blown off and collapsed. Despite the heavy damage, with the determination to overcome difficulties and quickly stabilize production and jobs for workers right after the storm passed, Nam Mau Coal Company focused on overcoming the consequences and actively supporting the families of affected workers.

Mr. Do Quang Trung, Chairman of the Nam Mau Coal Company's Trade Union, said: In order to promptly support and share the difficulties and losses of union members and workers affected by storm No. 3, on September 20, the Nam Mau Coal Company's Trade Union coordinated with experts to support all staff and workers with a level of 1.5 million VND/person. Recently, on October 1, the Vietnam Coal - Mineral Industry Trade Union organized a fund donation of 2.2 billion VND to 201 workers of Nam Mau Coal Company affected by storm No. 3. Of which, more than 700 million VND came from the TKV Trade Union fund and more than 1.5 billion VND came from the TKV Welfare Fund.

From this support fund, the Company supported 2 families whose houses collapsed with 70 million VND/family; 110 families whose houses had their roofs completely blown off were supported with 13 million VND/family. For the remaining 89 families whose roofs were blown off by 50% to less than 100% and whose houses were flooded with more than 1.5m, they were supported with 8 million VND/family. With the joint efforts to care for the workers, the damage caused by storm No. 3 was quickly overcome by the unit, the workers were able to return to work with peace of mind, stabilize and develop production immediately after the storm.

TKV Trade Union Chairman Le Thanh Xuan (standing in the middle) visited and encouraged the family of worker Tran Thanh Van (Cua Ong Coal Selection Company) who suffered damage due to storm No. 3.

Together with Nam Mau Coal Company, immediately after storm No. 3, the Vietnam Coal and Minerals Trade Union directed 100% of units to survey, grasp the situation, and make a list of affected workers' families for support. Immediately after the storm passed, the TKV Trade Union organized 4 delegations to visit the families of workers of the units in Quang Ninh, to encourage, express condolences, visit, and share with the families whose relatives died, the families whose houses and properties were damaged by the storm to quickly overcome difficulties, stabilize their spirits, and quickly stabilize their lives.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Trade Union, in the recent storm No. 3, TKV had 2,625 cases of workers' houses being blown off, flooded, or having landslides. The total amount of money spent to support businesses, union members, and workers in TKV for the damage caused by storm No. 3 was 30.652 billion VND (spent from the TKV Trade Union Activity Fund was 11.202 billion VND; spent from the TKV Welfare Fund was 19.45 billion VND).

The support levels for workers who died while on duty are 35 million VND/person; 20 million VND/person for workers who died while not on duty; and 10 million VND/person for relatives of workers who died. Workers who were injured and had to be hospitalized will receive 10 million VND/person. In addition, TKV also supports from 8-70 million VND/family in cases where workers' houses collapsed and could not be repaired, had to be rebuilt, and houses with damaged roofs.

Mr. Le Thanh Xuan, Chairman of TKV Trade Union, said: In addition to visiting and providing support to workers, trade unions at all levels in the industry have coordinated with experts to take measures to overcome the consequences caused by the storm to quickly organize production and business activities as soon as possible and as safely as possible. Up to this point, all production and business activities of TKV have stabilized. Units are actively disbursing funds to support workers affected by storm No. 3. This is a timely encouragement to help workers and laborers quickly overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives and jobs.
