Lighting up hope of identifying martyrs from DNA testing

Việt NamViệt Nam02/05/2025

The war has ended, but there are still thousands of martyrs whose names and hometowns have not been identified. With the desire to show gratitude, and also a sacred responsibility, the police force has implemented a program to collect DNA samples from relatives of unidentified martyrs to serve the work of matching and identification, gradually bringing them back to their families and their motherland. In Da Nang City, recently, the City Police coordinated with the Department of Administrative Management of Social Order - Ministry of Public Security to organize this meaningful activity.

Lighting up hope of identifying martyrs from DNA testing

At the Reception Room of the Department of Administrative Management of Social Order – Da Nang City Police, many relatives of martyrs were present to participate in taking DNA samples as planned. During this period, 10 mothers of martyrs (including 3 Heroic Vietnamese Mothers) and 8 relatives of the same maternal bloodline had their biological samples collected to be stored in the National Gene Bank.

The program aims to serve the work of matching and verifying the identities of the remains of martyrs with unknown information being buried in cemeteries across the country - a task that is both scientific and contains profound humanistic values.

To ensure convenience, Da Nang City Police have deployed both options: collecting samples at headquarters and mobile sampling at home for cases of old age, weak health, and unable to move.

One of the sample participants was Mrs. Dang Thi Hung (94 years old) and her son - Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung. They came with the hope of finding information about their son who died in the resistance war and whose whereabouts are still unknown.

At the sampling session, the Department of Administrative Management of Social Order - Da Nang City Police presented gifts of gratitude to the martyrs' families, expressing the deep gratitude and humanity of the police force for the great sacrifices in the two resistance wars.

Today’s drops of blood are not just biological data – they are also memories, and aspirations for reunion. And although the journey to find the names of martyrs is still long, each step of this program is quietly lighting up hope for thousands of families across the country.
